Chapter 2:Business as usual

We hopped into his '50s truck. He told me it was his fathers prized possession and he inherited it when his father died. The seats were leather, the paint was sea foam green with chrome side steps. The truck was in good condition unlike me.

On the way to work I took in the scenery of the woods. It was amazing even though it was often cold. But then again it was the beginning of October. The leaves went from a vibrant green to an amber yellow then a sunburnt orange. It was an extraordinary sight.

We arrived at the Whelk county police department. It wasn't the first place I would choose to work out of. There was a rivalry between the counties. We would have a police appreciation parade and it got so competitive between us two counties and no one else.

"Headquarters can you read? It's officer Karman." a voice came in on the radio.

"This is head quarters, how can I help you officer Karman?"

"We have a shoot out over here on 11423 convalesce st. They also have hostages, we need backup."

" Alright I'll send two officers now." said the front desk lady.

"Is there anyone close to 11423 convalesce st.? Officer Karman needs back up. We have a hostage situation and the attacker is armed and dangerous."

Bill grabbed the radio and said,"Officer King and I've got it, on our way now."

Bill flipped the lights and siren on. He turned around as fast as he could as all the cars yielded to him. We must have been going 90 miles per hour. The car screeched to a halt at the scene. Bill and I jumped out and crouched to meet officer Karman.

"The man with the gun is in the top right window." he gestured to the house while talking in a southern accent.

With the curtain blowing around in the wind it was very hard to see where he was. The house was dark and gave off a foul play vibe. Something terrible had happened in that house I could feel it and it was making me uneasy. Every now and then you would see a glimpse off the man and hear him shout so very crude things like,

"If y'all pigs don get outta here and leave me then I'll shoot ya."

"I got me wife nd kids right her and I'll kill em all if I don get what I want! y'all hear!?"

This man was clearly on drugs. This had been going on now for an hour and I was getting tired. I reached in through the window of the car and grabbed the radio. I wanted to surprise him and he would never see it coming. This man deserves everything he gets.

Screech! I could hear from blocks away. And I knew the surprise was almost here. The screeches came to a stop just behind the house. Everything was silent for a few minutes. Then BANG! BANG! We wondered what happened as we waited for someone to come out. But who we couldn't tell.

"All clear!" a police officer yelled from the room where the man was.

The moment of distress was relieved by the voice of an officer. Everything was done. The wife and kids survived but the man did not. I wondered what this man wanted so badly he turned on his own family. We could go back to the office now. But first we have to find out what happened in those few briefs minutes in time.

" Officer Collins," I yelled acrost the yard.

" Oh officer King,"

" Thanks for saving us. But what shots were fired?"

" The man shot at me but he missed so I shot him right in the chest and he died on instant contact."he said.

The man was dead. But he looked like a crazed old man who hasn't stopped drinking since he was born. With his old dirty overalls he laid on the ground with blood spewing from his back. But I never found out what the man wanted so badly.

The next day

"Hey Jane, can you go over to 4659 good ave. To check it out. We got a 911 call from there but someone was crying then it faded." I heard from behind me.

I turned around to see it was Jim my boss, " Oh yeah Jim I'll be right on it. By the way it's nice to see you too!" I snickered.

" Nice to see you again!" he said sarcastically with a smile.

Jim has been my boss since day one. He was an average sized guy, light brown hair slicked back, big black glasses and he always wore a gold chain and a gold watch. He never was really friendly but he always got the job done. Even though we sarcastically joke a lot I respect him too. He has done a lot of field work and has a lot of medals from it.

I arrived at the address in about five minutes. It was a small house the outside was white with black shudders. It seem sad and sick, the plants in the front yard were dead ir dying. The house sent shivers up my spine. Every side if the house was cracked or about ready to.

Something felt very wrong about this situation. I grabbed my gun out of the holster. Putting the flashlight in my other hand I stared at the knocker on the door. It was very strange one I had never seen. it looked like people screaming in a big pile.

While I knocked on the door I yelled,

" This is an officer! please let me in!"

There was no response so I had no choice but to kick the door in. I walked inside the house everything was calm. Everything looked normal but I looked anyway something had to be lurking in the shadows. Usually I would be comfortable if Bill were with me but he had to go to jury duty today. So I was all alone today.

As I tip toed down the long staircase it ended at a white door covered in dirt. Or what I believed to be dirt. The stairs were wooden but so warped they were crooked. But warped from what? I asked myself. I went to grab the gleaming golden door knob but I knew this situation all too well.
