After a T.V dinner my father went to the liquor store. Weird, my father never drinks. I shrugged it off and walked across the street to my second house. It's where my best friend Huey Freeman lives. I call it my second house because that's where I always am if I'm not at my house or at The tree.
I turned the cold doorknob and slowly opened the door. I always had easy access to the Freeman house. I let myself in to see Riley flipping through channels on the T.V. "Damn bitch don't you knock?" He asked taking a slight glance at me. He turned his head back to the Screen quickly though. I ignored him, this was my normal technique to get him to stop teasing me. Most of the time It didn't work behind he'd find my soft spots and soft subjects. Sometimes when it got really bad Huey would say something, but it wouldn't really help. He never really stood up for me when it came to Riley, but with other people he had somewhat of a shorter temper. But it wasn't really that different. I took off my shoes by the steps and put them in my usual spot. This was how Huey would figure out if I was here, by looking at the spot where my shoes usually are. Mainly because sometimes I come when he's not here and wait for him.
I walked up the stairs not making much noise. I found Huey and Riley's room immediately. Their Granddad still hadn't given them their own room yet. I think now might be the time because they're both boys and need privacy. My mom said that boys use their private time to watch disgusting things, but I don't believe Huey does that, Riley might though. I knocked on the door issuing my usual knock. Huey knew it by heart. "Come in Jazmine." He said in his usual tone of voice. He sent chills down my spine when I talked to him sometimes. I've never learned why, I just assumed it was the way he spoke. I opened the door and sat on the desk that was next to the computer. Forget chairs table tops were way better. "What are you doing?" I said slumping over and looking over at him. He didn't turn his head to me, he continued to look at the computer. "Writing my report on my Opinion of Democracy." He replied. I forgot about that! So much for straight A's. Now my report will be late.
"Huey why are you always so quiet?" I asked trying to break the silence. He turned his head to look at me. "Jazmine what do you want?" He said sternly. He made it sound like he wanted me to leave but I know he didn't. I didn't have an answer. I just looked at my socked feet, and moved them around. He turned back to the computer and sighed.
"I want something to do." I said breaking the silence awhile later. He raised a brow and cleared his throat. "You know. Like how sometimes we go on trips and things." I said making it clearer. I didn't look at him I still had my eyes locked on my feet. After another long portion of silence I felt awkward, like my request was stupid. I got up to leave embarrassed. "You can help me run errands." He said making me stop in my tracks. He stood up and walked over to the closet to grab his jacket. I was in the doorway watching him. He was taller than me, but he didn't tower over me.
We walked to the Library. There was never really anyone there adding on to the silence. I looked in the aisles where the kids books were. Next to them were the romance novels and books. Hmm...Maybe I'll get one of those this time. Many of the books I passed had pretty covers. I found a book titled " The Touch of the Kiss will Last Forever". On the back I read the description. It had fancy letters, I liked that about it. It said it was about a girl named Raven who falls in love with a boy who's always in trouble. There's already a boy who loves her that she wants to love back, but she can't help but have feelings for the Badboy.
Wow this book sounds good. "Jazmine." Huey calls my name and I see him at the checkout desk. I walk over to him and put the book on the desk confidently. I feel proud for renting a smart people book. It has big words and I feel grown up. Huey raises an eyebrow at me. I think he's read almost every book here, he avoided the romance section though. "Are you sure about this?" He says reading the back. I nod happily. He shrugs his shoulders and let's the man at the desk Mark it up.
I have to return the book next month.
When we get outside I voluntarily carry the bag with the books in it. "Can we start a group?" I ask Huey smiling. He raises an eyebrow again. "What do you mean?" He asks looking at me. " Like how you always do the whole revolution thing to make everything better. But I want to be included this time." I say trying my best to describe what I meant. " We'll see Jazmine." Huey was never really good with carrying on conversation. It always made me feel like he was trying to avoid talking to me.
Huey and I went to the jail to visit ShaBazz today. Sometimes we still went to talk to the lonely man. It wasn't even his fault he was locked up, Huey told me that it was all the racist blind people in this town. I never fully understood what he meant by that. That's how it is with a lot of things Huey says. We still work up plans to get him free, one time we got really close, but Huey's granddad dragged him home for dinner, so we had to abandon the plan. Huey actually had actually worked me into the Cuba part of his plan, so we could go together. This was proof that he truly was my best friend.
Shabazz had grown to like me, sometimes he would awkwardly wink to Huey, I don't know why. "I've thought of another plan to get you out." Huey said. "It's not great but it's a plan." He added on. I blocked this part out, it was getting late and I was hungry. We left 15 minutes later. It had gotten colder since we were last out here. Should've thought to bring a bigger jacket. Huey always bundles up. I watched him jealously. That nice warm coat, warm grey gloves, and grey scarf that he usually wears. I shivered and grabbed the other sides of my arms to try and warm up. Huey must've noticed this because he handed me his scarf, like he did when we were 10. Sometimes he'd show his nicer side to me, I wouldn't see him do this to anyone else but me. It made me feel special.
While we were walking back to the Freeman house I looked behind me. Just casually. There was a man with sunglasses walking behind us. It felt like he was following us, I shrugged that thought off. I was never really as paranoid as Huey was. Huey walked me to a vegetarian healthy store. He bought us some snacks and things to eat. We bought a lot actually, we were going to put this stuff in our packs for Cuba. I turned around to see the same man walking behind us. "Uh Huey." I whispered tapping his shoulder. I darted my eyes in the direction of the man. He looked back to see the man that I saw. His eyes widened when he turned back to me. "Damn it!" Was all he said before grabbing my wrist and throwing me in the shopping cart.
He pushed the car fast. At first I thought it was a little fun but then I began to become scared. The man ran after Huey and I. Huey broke the window in a car. He broke the window! That's illegal!
He unlocked the car door through the window and threw everything in the cart in, including me. The man wasn't far behind. Huey took out 2 wires in the car and rubbed them together, making the car start. "Huey what's happening!?" I asked nervously. He sped off. " It's the government they've figured out that I'm not retired anymore and they're after me." He said fastly. "Why do I have to run?" I asked keeping my scared tone of voice. "Because you were apart of this to, this is now also your problem." He said avoiding cars. "Huey Freeman, You're the only person I know that can completely turn EVERYTHING into a problem." I said.
