My Best Friend is the School's Bad Boy
Gone
"Say goodbye Jensen and then meet me in the cab. I'll be waiting." Jensen's mother kissed the side of his head before hauling their bags to the cab.
Jensen's tiny feet slowly crossed over to the neighboring lawn and made his way to stand in front of his best friend, Sofia. His image mirrored hers perfectly at this moment: bodies hunched forward, cheeks an angry red, and eyes puffy. Sofia was looking at his feet, trying to hide the quiet tears that were running down her face. It made him want to cry all over again seeing how hard she was trying to hide her tears from him but he knew he needed to be strong for her.
"Don't leave Jensen. They'll bully me again and you won't be here to protect me." Sofia's voice was a soft whisper but Jensen heard every word that fell from her lips. Her eyes slowly rose to connect with his, their eyes glimmering with tears and an involuntary sob left her. After a moment of silence, Sofia threw her arms around her best friend's shoulders and hugged him tightly to her, wishing that he would never be able to escape her arms.
Jensen hugged her with a fierce intensity and wished with everything that Sofia would stay protected in his absence. Even though he was only eight years old, he knew that leaving this girl was breaking his heart and that he would never forget her.
"Don't worry about those meanies, Sof. They won't dare to mess with you. I promise." Sofia looked into his gray-blue eyes as he wiped away her tears. She nodded bravely before hugging him again, one last time.
"Don't forget about me." She whispered into his shirt before stepping away. He gave her a sad, shaky smile.
"You too. I want you to have this so that you'll remember me. " He removed the necklace from around his neck. The sunlight gave a certain twinkle to the golden soccer ball pendant at the end of the silver chain as he placed it around her neck.
"This is your favorite necklace Jensen. You never take it off!" She gasped at the gesture while admiring the necklace.
"Now, I'll be able to find you when I come back. I will come back. I pinky promise! You have to promise me something else though."
"Anything." She said still admiring how the sun bounced off the gold and made it shine.
"Promise me that you'll be strong and you will keep playing soccer no matter what." He held out his tiny, childish pinkie.
"I promise." She entwined her pinkie with his, sealing their promises and reassuring one another that their words weren't just words.
They wrapped each other in one last embrace before Jensen jogged to the cab where his mother was looking on at their interaction with a small smile. As the cab jerked forward and rode steadily down the road, Jensen pressed his hand against the glass and cried at the sight of his best friend shrinking, blending into the small-town home that he was leaving behind.
Sofia ran behind the cab, waving her hands around, up until it got to the end of the street and sped out of sight. She looked down at her necklace and gave a sad smile.
Even if her best friend never returned, she, Sofia Rosena Sky, would never forget him, Jensen Bryson Walker.
