CHAPTER THREE
HELP THE PACK, JOIN THE PACK.FIREFLIES WERE CARA'S favourite bug. She loved the way they illuminated the sky at night, and how they could create beautiful scenarios in the darkness. Kol and her kept watching them, with their hands intertwined and genuine smiles on their faces. Everything felt so peaceful for the first time in a while.
It was Friday night, and the freckled girl was thankful that the week was finally over. Even though she had been enjoying school lately, there were a couple of professors who made tedious the most interesting subjects.
That day, the girl decided to postpone her homework for the weekend, being as her boyfriend was in town and she wanted to spend time with him. Aunt Sarah wasn't too pleased with that, or whom her niece was dating, but she granted permission to the raven-haired girl only because she had guard all night at the hospital.
"When I was younger, I used to come to California all the time. Well, mostly on summertime," Cara said, breaking the comfortable silence between her and Kol. "I remember how excited I was when the first firefly appeared at night, and the disappointment that it caused me to discover that those little bugs don't glow in California," this was the first time she allowed herself to remember a treasured memory of her father, but she didn't dare to mention it. "Back in Mystic Falls, there they glow their brightest. Have you ever noticed that? They shine as if their life depends on it; every first and last day of each month, before going to bed, I went to the woods behind my house to catch some in a crystal jar."
She remembered how her father helped her reach the fireflies that were flying at a higher level than the small girl. The laughs and tickles shared, and the way he always made sure to see his little girl smile.
When Kol realised she wasn't going to keep talking, he squeezed her small hand in his, placing a gentle kiss on her forehead. He didn't need her to reveal that the memory included her father, as he could read the girl better than anyone else. Even better than her childhood best friend: Bonnie Bennett.
"What did you do then?" He asked, wrapping his arms around her waist to pull her closer to his body.
She hesitated for a few seconds, scared that if she continued with her story, she would get more emotional. "Um, we- I mean, I released them, and that was it. After setting them free, I went back home and slept till the next morning."
Laying her head on his shoulder, she brought her lips to his cheek and placed a tender kiss.
"I bet," the girl smirked, "that you can't catch more than two fireflies at once." She pursed her lips together.
"Is that a challenge?"
She nodded. "You are banned from using your supernatural abilities, though."
Taking the small crystal jar the girl had brought with her, she gave it to her boyfriend and watched as he stood up and got deeper into the woods. He had a determined look on his face, and wondered how hard could it be to catch a couple of small bugs flying clumsily in the air. He was tall enough to reach a fair amount of fireflies, so he made his first attempt.
