Memphis' P.O.V
I leant back in my desk chair and put my hands behind my head, clicking my pen over and over as I looked at the computer screen displaying my bank account.
Everything was sorted and arranged. I'd had to scrape a little from my savings for this trip, but it was something I was willing to do for Dustin, college could always wait another year.
“Hey sweetheart,” came my mum's voice as she poked her head into my room. She looked more tired than usual, with purple bags under her eyes. And her clothes were getting baggier on her by the day.
“Hey mum, are you sure you're up to working tonight?” I asked, concerned. She was looking more and more fragile by the day. She came in and sat on the end of my bed, unable to stand for long. She reached out with a hand and patted my cheek. My stomach lurched, this wasn't good. I swivelled in my chair to face her.
“Honestly Memphis honey, I'm not going into work tonight. Actually, I wont be going back to work at all,” she sighed. I frowned.
“Mum, what's wrong?” I rushed, panic rising inside me as I edged closer to her, taking her hand in both of mine.
“I suppose I can't put it off any longer. You're father and I wanted to spare your worry for as long as possible. But... it's not looking too good,” mum went on. I rose to my feet, looking down at her. I was shaking, I couldn't breathe, the worst was running through my mind and hiking up my blood pressure level. Tears flowed down my mothers cheeks and onto the chest of her shirt.
“Baby, I've got breast cancer,” she sobbed. I fell to my knees in front of her and hugged her tightly, my face growing hot and stinging.
“When did you find out?” I gasped, choking.
“A few months ago. I've been having treatment. I go in for Chemo tomorrow morning but... it's already spread so much, so quickly. I'm so sorry honey, I didn't want to ruin your trip with Dustin but...” my mother burst into tears.
“I'm not going on the trip mum, I'm staying here with you,” I declared, pulling back and looking into her bloodshot eyes, letting her know I was dead serious.
“But sweetie, Dustin-”
“Dustin can go with Aisling mum,” I nodded, rising. I grabbed my phone and put it in my pocket, then helped my mother up and walked with her out of my room.
“Would you like some tea?” I asked as I sat her down on the couch.
“That would be lovely Memphis,” she cooed and closed her eyes. I gulped and went into the kitchen, turning on the kettle.
I pulled out my phone and hit speed dial for Dustin.
“Hi,” he said when he picked up. I bit my lip, taking a moment to slow my breathing.
