I collapsed to my knees on my carpet. I knew there'd been something up with him.

“Benj?” I gasped out in shock. I glanced around for my best friend, but there was definitely no sign of him. I turned and rushed into the hall, almost smacking right into Memphis. He chuckled and grabbed me.

“You're so cheeky,” he grinned. I shoved him away.

“Benjamin is gone,” I whined, racing down the hall and checking in all the rooms, calling his name. Benjamin always waited for me to get home in my room. This was too... out of the ordinary. Mum and dad were sitting in the living room playing a game of chess.

“Hey sweetness, what's up?” mum said airily, finger on her lips concentrating on the chess board. Dad winked at me, he must be winning.

“Did you realise you wanted dessert?” he asked me.

“Have you seen Benjamin?” I asked them in a half panic, ignoring dad's question. Both of their heads snapped in my direction instantly. They understood.

Memphis appeared at my side, placing an arm around my waist.

“He has to be around here somewhere,” dad said, getting to his feet and adjusting his glasses. Mum got up too, rushing into the kitchen holding her stomach with both hands.

“Maybe he's just out playing and will be home for bed,” she offered from out of the room, more as a consultation then actually believing it. I shook my head furiously.

“He doesn't leave the house without me unless he's going to meet me,” I frowned.

Memphis started pulling me towards the door.

“I'll drive you around town and we can have a look together, he's got to be somewhere,” he said with absolute seriousness. I stopped in the hallway and looked up into his eyes. He frowned, questioning my halt. He understood, he actually fully understood the weight of this problem to me.

“I love you,” I said and grabbed his face, kissing him. He smiled slightly and pulled away, taking my hand and rushing with me out the door.

We had to hurry.

Something was very wrong here.

I jumped into the car and so did Memphis. He started the car quickly, revving the cold engine and then threw it into reverse, streaming out the driveway as I did my seat belt up. We soared off down the street and I had my face pressed to the window, staring with wide eyes at the streets for any sign of movement.

I wanted to call Ash and tell her everything, about Benjamin disappearing, but she couldn't see him so she couldn't help.

My heart was racing in my chest so fast I was shaking, and I felt physically sick to the core of my soul. If Benjamin was gone... if something had happened to him... I wouldn't be able to live.

When I'd been stabbed and I'd lost consciousness, I'd gone to a room somewhere I didn't know. Benjamin was there, he talked to me and comforted me. He told me stories to pass the time, and then told me when it was time for me to wake up.

He'd been by the side since the day my parents died, he'd always looked out for me, always took care of me no matter what. He'd never asked for much in return, just a little of my love and affection.
