chapter 2 -

(Kiyomi's p.o.v)

Following the gate event, it was class. Obviously, I didn't understand the majority of what was being taught which lead to me not doing any work. Boredom got the best of me and I asked Sensei to go to the bathroom. Me being me, I didn't go to the bathroom. I didn't like the idea of being babysat everywhere I went so this was the perfect opportunity to explore by myself. Complete bliss.

Leaving the main building, I assessed my surroundings before settling on the woods surrounding the school. It seemed like a quiet and fun place to chill and explore. With all the trees and semi-open space. Even though it had only been a day, it was nice to escape from all the people. Maybe I'd be able to find a way to escape from the school grounds altogether.

As I ventured through the gradually spacing out trees, I began to feel as though I was being watched. It was most likely due to underlying paranoia- I was in the woods all alone so it was natural. 
A small while later I was sat down having a rest when yet again, a tall slender shadow was cast over my own. I tilted my head up to come eye to eye with a teenage male, his silvery-white hair matching mine and his icy blue eyes standing out against his pale complexion. 
"Found you!"

Huh? I found myself stunned. He had no school uniform on and was far too young to be a professor so why was he wandering through the school woods. And what did he mean 'Found you' ? It took me a moment to realize I was staring at him. 
"Oh- sorry sir. I didn't mean to stare."
I tilted my head downward, feeling slightly embarrassed. For some odd reason, I wasn't afraid of this random man who seemed to have been looking for me. Weird right? 

The light-hearted chuckle that followed lifted some of the embarrassment off my shoulders.
"Heh. Don't worry about it kid! Speaking of that, what's a kid like you doing wandering around the academy woods? There is no way you're 15."

Did- Did he seriously just ask what I was doing here? I should be the one asking that.

"I'm 12. And as for your question, I'm a student here. The real question is what are you doing here? You're not wearing a uniform and you certainly are not a professor here."
Why did I feel like I knew this man?

The male looked down at me before placing his large hands on my shoulders, spinning me around so that I was facing toward the academy before he began to slowly walk forward.
"Well, you see, I'm the son of Rido Kuran. So I can be at any place, any time I want. My name is Reid. Stupid name, I know, but my father wanted me to grow up to be just like him and in his brain, having a similar name to his will achieve that."
His right hand had left my shoulder and was flapping about dismissively as he spoke.

My face paled as the work 'Kuran' reached my ears. Did my biological family send for him?
Maybe it was nothing.
"I am the adopted daughter of Jess Tachijo. I go by the name of Kiyomi Tachijo"

"Adopted? As in given up and taken in by a new family?"

How incompetent could this man be? It's a simple word.
I giggled at his stupidity, earning me a confused look from him.
"Yes. Last time I checked there wasn't any other definition. My biological parents are your aunt and uncle, Juuri-Sa- Ahem, Juuri and Haruka Kuran. You and I, Sir, are cousins,"

A smile spread across his face as he heard me explain
"Hm- Cousins you say? Awesome! I've always wanted a little cousin! This is totally awesome! Also, you seem overly literate for a 12-year-old. Oh! And why are you here specifically? And the.. day class? If you're a Kuran then you're a vampire and should be in the night class. 

Hm. He didn't seem to be aware that Kaname and Yuki existed. Did Rido keep him sheltered from the rest of the world?

"Mhm. Before I was kicked out of the Kuran residence, I used to spend what little spare time I had in the Library studying magic, history, etc. I also practised writing and it was all pretty easy considering none of them gave a shit about me and wouldn't bother me much. As for why I'm here, Jess, my mother, was assassinated and my brother is enrolled in the academy so here I am as some sort of charity case."

By the time I'd finished talking, we'd reached the rim of the woods and I could see the school in the distance so of course, Reid and I said our goodbyes.

"It was nice meeting you, Kiyomi," He raised a hand to pet my head gently. "I do hope we can meet again! I'll be in touch."

I closed my eyes and tilted my head upwards slightly as he pet my head, enjoying the show of affection.
"It was lovely to meet you too Reid. I'll look forward to when we next meet."

We exchanged waves before I began to head back to the sun dorms and he wandered back into the woods, probably back to wherever he came from. Once I'd scampered up the brick wall, I stayed put for a little while longer, thinking about Reid and his father Rido.

When I was a young child, I'd always been warned against speaking of Rido as he was labelled as a violent, crazy psychopath with a thirst for power. According to the history books and tales I'd been fed, he had an ability to take one's power and merge it with his own. From old pictures I'd gathered that he looked like an older version of Kaname, almost the spitting image if it weren't for his mismatched eyes. One being a reddish-brown and the other an icy blue, like Reid's eyes.

It puzzled me how something so sweet and affectionate like Reid could come from what seemed to be a monster. Weird. Reid never mentioned his mother. Perhaps she died or fled from Rido. I presume he'd inherited his silvery hair from his mother. A perfect combination from both parents.


Juuri had long, mahogany hair with matching reddish-brown eyes, as did Yuuki.
Haruka had dark brown, almost black shoulder-length hair with matching brown eyes, as did Kaname.

I, on the other hand, was left with a length of silvery-grey hair and emerald eyes. Nobody in my family possessed these featured, which was why I'd been rejected a lot.

A small yelling had pulled me from my thoughts. Zero?

"Oi! ! Kiyomi over here! What are you doing up there! Get down!"

Following his orders, I slid from the wall, dreading whatever consequences came next.
