AN: this was a prompt from Hannah who I'm writing Demon Hunters with. I couldn't write this chapter for a while because it's on Google Docs and the mobile version is... CRAPPY! So she said to write it here.
If you are confused, good. You should be, it's chapter 12! Consider this to be a sneak peek... if you like it and want to read more, check out her profile!
Evelyn's POV:
Adam and I stand there for a while. Wasn't that supposed to be a full on attack to stop us from meeting up with the other people? It seemed like they were just testing our strength, judging from the way they disappeared. But why would they do that?
My mind is whirling as I try to figure out the reason for their sudden disappearance. I sigh, knowing that I have a mission to complete. I guess I will have time to think about it later.
I nudge Adam, who also looks bewildered. "Come on, let's go."
"What?"
I sigh once more. "Remember? We had a mission... it's time to meet Skylar Of The Cold," I use the name that Death used, but I say it mockingly.
I've never really liked people with long fancy names, it's dramatic and not very practical. But then again, it's not up to me. Sadly.
"Oh yeah," Adam seems to have snapped out of his trance.
I grab his arm. I can't wait to go back to the Shadow Realm. I've always enjoyed the peaceful simplicity of the place. It's always quiet, and there aren't any bright colors to distract me. The perfect place to think. And a great method of transportation.
I close my eyes and block out my distracting surroundings. I feel a slight tug, and when I open them again, we're in the Shadow Realm.
I breathe out a sigh of relief. I feel so great to be back here, someplace familiar. After all that's happened today, I need to feel some relaxation.
"Follow me," I say to Adam. Even though he is hosting Death, he does not possess the ability to properly use the Shadow Realm on his own. It's a unique skill that only demons and the elves have, but they call it The Void.
It's strange to imagine the elves, all cheery and wise, walking about the swirling darkness that is the Shadow Realm. I've never really liked elves, they always seem to think they are better than everyone.
Adam and I walk together, with me holding on to his arm so he doesn't get lost.
If you get lost in the Shadow Realm, and you aren't a demon, you will be forced to wander in here until you die from starvation or unseen predators.
Not exactly something that would help the mission, since he is Death's host, but he should be careful not to annoy me or get in my way because there's no telling what my reaction will be.
"Ah here, this is the spot," I stop walking.
Adam follows suit and we stand still. I grip his arm, and close my eyes again.
I feel a splash of momentary warmth over my body and I open my eyes. Then a cold, cold wind blows over me and I shiver slightly.
I open my eyes and almost immediately regret it.
Swearing under my breath, I mutter, "I hate the sun."
Adam chuckles and I ignore him.
All around us is white, pure white snow caking the dark green trees. It would be quite beautiful, except the snow is reflecting the light right into my eyes.
To clear my vision, I blink several times until I feel like I can see again.
Much better. I turn my head, scanning my surroundings. Nothing, everywhere I turn just has white snow.
"Where the hell is she?" I ask in impatience. Adam has a tracker so we can find the people we need. Death gave it to him, so I have to rely on him to guide us.
"I'm not sure... This is where she was last. But I can't seem to find her on here anywhere," Adam mutters, staring at the tracker.
Where the hell could she have gone? She was supposed to be here, waiting for us. Death made contact with the elves to set it up.
God, I hate when things don't work out according to the plan. It's so frustrating!
"Well check it again," I demand angrily.
I walk off to look for any possible evidence.
After I walk past several trees, I find a clearing in the snow. To my left is a tree trunk, and my eyes widen when I see a red stain.
There is red everywhere, staining the brilliant white snow.
"Adam... Come over here," I say cautiously.
In case there is an attack, some backup would be handy.
I hear snow crunching, and he emerges from the trees.
As soon as he steps in, he says, "What is it?"
I don't answer, and let him find out by himself. After a few seconds, his eyes land on the blood.
"What happened here? Do you think something happened to Skylar and that's why we can't find her?" He asks.
"Exactly what I was thinking."
A million thoughts are circling around my head. What if she's dead? If so, what are we going to do? Who killed her? Why?
But if she isn't dead, where is she?
Suddenly, Adam interrupts my thoughts. "The tracker!"
I hurry over to him, not needing more of an explanation. Peering over his shoulder, I see that the tracker has picked something up.
I breathe out a sigh of relief, and not wanting to wait any longer, I grab Adam's arm.
When we arrive in the Shadow Realm again, my mind is soothed for the second time that day. Today really has been a stressful day, hasn't it?
Luckily, we don't have to walk very far before we reach the spot we need to be at. I check Adam's tracker again to confirm that this is the location.
Everything looks good, and back to the colorful world we go.
When I feel the familiar warmth, I open my eyes and look around. We are standing outside a house. Everything about it looks meticulously clean, yet bare. The only color is white, and nothing else.
Even though it looks slightly beaten up, you can tell that the paint has been reapplied recently as an attempt to cover up the peeling wood.
"Well, shall we knock?" Adam asks.
I nod, and walk to the door. The doorknob looks like it has been polished multiple times. I stand there and take in all the details. Could this be Skylar's house?
Since I was just standing there, Adam decides to take the initiative and knock for me.
He raps the wooden door twice, then stands back to wait.
Since I have advanced hearing (one of the advantages of being a demon), I can hear footsteps walking towards the door from the inside of the house.
They get closer, until they are standing right outside of the door. Then a pause. And finally, the creaking of the door being opened.
AN: Should I leave it there? Maybe I will write more later but I'm not in a good mood right now.
