-a few weeks later-
"Sam!" I got up slowly, my eyes still closed.
"What!"
"Come on, it's the day!" Still a little groggy from my sleep I realized that today was my first day of college and I would be seeing my new dorm and getting all my classes. Rubbing my eyes, I grabbed my towels and headed to the bathroom for a shower. The warm water felt great against my cold skin. Dad must've had the air conditioning blowing hard last night. I literally had five blankets covering me and I was still freezing. I dozed off because I hear Maxim banging on the bathroom door. Maxim was my step-mom's brother. He was only 3 years older than me and was visiting from Russia for the summer. I quickly rinse my body off and step out.
"Jesus what took you so long." he huffed.
"I was sacrificing my leg hair to Satan," He look horrified and I laughed all the way to my room. "I'm kidding you geek!" I heard him start laughing too. I pulled my hair into a ponytail and started freaking out when I realized that it's later than expected. I sent a silent prayer thanking that I didn't wash my hair and got dressed quickly.
"Sam you ready? It takes two hours to get there."
"Yeah of course, let's do this." I climbed in the car with my book of the anatomy of violence.
"What's that?" my dad pointed to my book.
"It's a book of the biological roots of crime. It's actually very interesting and full of information that explains alot. Aunt Nancy got it for me."
"Aunt Nancy is always sending the weirdest of stuff."
...
Two hours later we pull into the front of the campus, greeted with palm trees on both sides and a huge fountain in the middle. This place was more than I imagined. The officers guided us to the parking section, which was super packed. It's filled with parents crying, freshmen trying to find their way around.
Orientation felt like it lasted years long. My dad excused himself to get my bags so we could find my dorm and so I would try and make some friends. I was greeted by two boys.
"Hey," They both said standing there awkwardly.
"Um, hey. Are you guys lost or something because this is my first year and I myself don't even know my way around." I finally took in both of the boys features. One of them had his hair way too short for a guy. He looked like a ventriliquest dummy. The other was far more interesting. He was tall, lean, and curly brown hair that looks like he just wakes up, shakes his hair and gets on with the day. He had tattoos all down his arms and wore a white v--neck which showed more on his torso. "Oh, wow,"
The tall boy caught me off guard. "We asked what your name was." His accent threw me off too. His voice was raspy, yet soothing and his accent topped it off. "Hello? Come back to Earth." His friend waved infront of face.
"Oh, sorry. What were you guys saying?"
"I'm Harry," the tall boy said. "And this is Ron. What's your name?"
"S- Samantha, But you can call me Sam." i stuttered, obviously nervous. They smiled again and the boy named Harry had the most gorgeous smile I had ever seen.
"We are new here too," Ron said breaking me from my gaze of Harry. "We should be friends." He smiled again. His smile wasn't as welcoming a Harry's was. "Do you have a phone?" Ron keeps talking and Harry seems to stand their shy and awkward. I can imagine I was doing the same.
"No, I don't."
"Whoa, who doesn't have a phone nowadays?"
"Well I had a phone, I kinda dropped it in the toilet and I haven't gotten a new one yet." I half smile, embarassed. Harry chuckles and Ron laughs a little too loud.
"Here's our numbers." He grabs the pen gaven to us during oreintation and writes his number on my arm. He passes the pen to Harry and he writes his number too. His warm touch and smile gave me the good kind of goosebumps. "Text us when you get a phone." Ron smiles again and leaves me alone, just when my dad comes back.
"Who were they?" My father ask concerned.
"Oh calm down dad. Just some new friends I made. I they gave their numbers, but it sucks since I don't have a phone."
"Ooh! Speaking of phones," He reached into his back pocket to pull out an iPhone. "I got you one. You're all alone and I just thought you should finally get one just in case you need something from me or your mother."
"Dad you can't be serious! This is awesome!" I never thought I'd be this happy over a phone. I haven't had one for almost a year. I felt like I missed so much of the latest technology.
"Let's go check out that dorm huh? This bags are a little heavy." my father struggles with my luggage and I help him by grabbing a bag and direct him towards my dorm.
"It's G35, I think it's towards this way?" I have no clue where I'm going. This map is way too complicated to read.
"Uh, sweetie. You just passed it."
"Oops!" I find my room and press in the key and unlock it. One bed is already preoccupied and the stranger comes and greets me with open arms.
"Hi, I'm Laura. Laura Ginnis. You must be my new roomie." Laura is a little shorter than me and has a messy brown bun in place along with leggings and a youth trip shirt. It said "Let God lead the way."
"Yeah, I'm Samantha Maddox." My hand goes out for a shake but he squeezes me into a hug. I awkwardly hug back.
"Well I'm going to go now," my father starts. "I love you Sam, have a great time and don't hesitate to call." We hug again for what seems like years. He finally leaves and as the door shuts I'm all alone. Finally freedom.
