The car was filled with an awkward silence as we drove away from the mall. Luke was the one to finally break it.
“Sorry those idiots ruined your makeover.” One hand was on the wheel and with the other he raked his long hair back. “I don’t really understand the race tension here in the ‘south’. Ugh!”
“Maybe I can try to explain it.” I offered. I really wasn’t in the mood for talking, but anything was better than the awkward silence. “See, for most of the people here, their families can be traced back to this very area. The way those guys took it, I’m guessing, was that I was disrespecting any black person who has worked for freedom by dating a white person that’s kin to a slave-owner.” After my statement, the awkward silence was back, but I didn’t try to force conversation.
“I know you’re tired, and those guys really shook you up, but can you tell me what you were going to say before we got to the mall.”
“I don’t see why whatever I had to say was so important! Why do you care soo much about how I feel about you?” Pain covered Luke’s face, but he didn’t answer my question. We drove all the way back to my house in silence.
Luke put the car in park, took off his seatbelt and turned in his seat so that he could stare into my eyes. “I want to know if I make your heart beat out of control, or if I get to close to you does your mouth dry. I want to know if the heat that grows in the pit of my stomach is worth paying attention to! Hell I want to know if you care enough about me. Is it wrong for me to want to know if I have a chance? That’s why I asked you how I make you feel!” Luke jumped out the car and slammed the door.
I couldn’t hold it in anymore. I got out the car and ran into my house. My mom and dad were in the living room sitting on the couch. Since their backs were to me I said a quick hello and ran to my room. In my room I fell on the bed and let the tears out. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to be with Luke and endure the kind of judgment we got from the guys at the mall. I wasn’t sure if I could trust him because every relationship I’ve had with a white person had ended badly. I didn’t need this and especially not before college.
A soft knock on the door was followed by Shae entering my room.
“My mom and your parents said I can stay so I’m spending the night. Don’t try to get rid of me.” Not asking any questions, Shae turned on soft music and started putting up all the stuff we’d bought knowing exactly where everything went. After she was done, she forced me to sit up and hugged me. We sat like that for a while, me crying in Shae’s arms.
Finally she broke the silence. “You wanna talk about what happened in the car?”
I knew I had to tell her. She would probably understand, she had to.
“Ok, so today Luke told me how I made him feel like no other girl has ever made him feel, then he asked me how I felt. On the way there I never got to answer and on the way back I was so shaken up that I asked him why he cared what I thought. Then he went on about wanting to know if my heart sped up when he touched me or if my mouth dried when he kissed me. He said he wanted to know to see if he had a chance.” I said tears still running down my face. I didn’t try to stop them. Those tears were my anger and fear escaping my body. I had to get rid of all these emotions some way.
“And how Do you feel about him? Does he have a chance?” Of course Shae would ask me the questions I couldn’t even answer. “Don’t know do ya’? Well whenever you decide just remember, it’s your decision and no one else’s so forget about the guys at the mall, forget about your old racist neighbors. Think about you and Luke. Think about how you make him feel and how he makes you feel.” Shae was always exactly what I needed, whether I needed someone to have my back like at the mall or someone to rub my back like now. She may be crazy, but I loved her because she always knew what to say and do.
“How about we get some rest and focus on everything tomorrow. Right now just forget it all and go to sleep.” It didn’t take long for me to fall into a deep slumber.
