WHERE DID SHE EVER GO WRONG?

Sunday morning, Adwoma is in church.
She stands to sing:
the two behind her flinch,
“Her skirt is too short, has she no respect?”
Adwoma just boarded the puberty train,
All her clothes never to fit the same.
Instead of a wardrobe crisis keeping her from a good service,
She doesn’t mind showing a little skin in church to break some curses.

Araba stayed up all night.
Trying to survive in an educational system which did more damage than good
So she takes her Friday nights off to party and go clubbing with maybe a glass or two of booze
She is called irresponsible and branded a mule.

Akuma has been body shamed for as long as she can remember
Now she covers her insecurities, with tattoos, piercings and glitter.
The same men who always asked for more,
Now see her and call her a whore.

Baaba never really did care what people thought.
She lived happily and care free like she always sought.
But the family she thought had her back always,
Now declared a stance against what they termed “her malice”.

Afi has always been an open book.
The stereotyping couldn’t stop her from taking a look,
And the hypocrites couldn’t prevent her from reading a book.
She had to know it all.
And if sex was a part of life,
Then she had to grasp the concept to feel alive.
Now she is said to have no shame,
For asking questions which should only be an adult’s game.

Ama seems perfect.
Her curves well defined,
Her mind more refined.
But she cries herself to sleep each night, not knowing who trust.
The men she called friends,
sooner than later confess they just want a piece of her.
She has been sexually objectified
And the thought of that makes her feel so sad.

Akasi is nowhere to be found
A bright child with so much to confound.
Rather than be branded like her friends,
she chooses to be hidden like a precious gem.

Where did they ever go wrong?
Their destinies shaped by their feminineness.
Some career ladders they are not encouraged to climbed,
Some social topics they are not allowed to discuss.
As some worlds go forward, others still disregard the efforts of the feminine populace.
Let’s support!
