Marshall lees POV;
I couldn't have her stay with me. To see how much pain I was really in. For her to only hurt herself to see what she out me through. She didn't do it on purpose; she fell. And I saved her because... Because...
"Marshall? Is that you?" I heard Gumballs voice trickle through the forest around me.
I turned to see him standing a few feet from me. "Oh hey, Gummi." I said, my voice scratchy.
"Are you okay?" We never really got along, but it didn't matter. Gummi would help anyone if they needed help. Even me. The vampire king.
"I hate to say it, Gummi. But I need help." I sucked in a crisp breath, even breathing hurt.
"What happened?" He asked as he knelt down next to me to examine me.
What was I going to tell him? That I fell? Yeah right. The truth? I don't know about that either. But what else was I going to do? I sucked in a breath and decided that the truth was best.
"Fionna fell and I caught her. Saved her. Riiiight before we smashed into the ground." His face twisted with concern.
"Is she alright?"
"I just said I saved her. Were you not listening?" I looked at him, suppressing an eye roll.
He quickly pulled something out of his pocket and shoved it down my throat. I coughed, pushing his hand away quickly.
"What the junk, man?!" I yelled, but the pain was gone. All of it. I sat up and looked myself over. "Ah, Gummi. You're a life saver. Thank you."
"Hey, do you know where Fionna went?" He asked, looking around. "I was going to ask her to go as my date to her party tomorrow."
A shot of jealousy stabbed through my chest. "Yeah I don't know, Gumball. She ran off that way." I pointed in the opposite direction of which she ran, and I wasn't actually to sure why. Why did I care if she went with him?
"Why did she run off?" He asked, standing up.
"Uhm." I muttered. "Cake. Yes, cake. She had to go to lord monochromicorns to meet cake." I lied, a smirk plastered on my face. Why was I lying?
I was protecting a friend, that's why. She deserved better then Gumball. He turned her down countless times, and now that she was going to be eighteen, he wanted to jump on that. I tried to suppress my anger.
"Oh. Okay, thanks Marshall Lee. I'll see you tomorrow?" He asked, beginning to walk in the direction of lord monochromicorns.
"Tomorrow at the party, Gummi." I gave him a little wave before I floated up and off to find Fionna.
I hovered over the trees, searching around before I saw her slumped over on a tree route. I landed softly behind her, taking a step toward her.
"Fionna.." I said quietly.
She jumped, turning around to reveal her red tear streaked face. "Marshall?" She looked over me quickly. "You're better?"
I shoved my hands in my pockets and shrugged. "Yeah, Gummi healed me." I gritted my teeth. "He's looking for you by the way."
She turned from me, looking back at the tree. "Oh, and what's he want?"
"He wants you to be his date for your party tomorrow." I said blandly. I couldn't keep if from her. She was my best friend. My only friend...
She straightened out a bit and stood up. "Oh." Was all she said before walking off into the forest.
I followed after her, "are you still mad at me?"
"What do you think?" Her voice leaked with disdain.
"Fionna." I said softly, running a hand through my hair. But she continued to walk. I reached out and wrapped my arm around her waist and flew up into the sky quickly.
She screamed in protest, wiggling around and yelling. "Marshall Lee, put me down!"
"Just listen to me!" I yelled over her screaming. She quieted down, and I sighed. "I'm sorry. Okay? But I didn't want you to be around me like that. See me like that." My voice was quiet. I never talked like this, let alone apologize. "I just wanted to protect you, that's all I ever do. You're my best friend, Fionna."
Friend... That's right, friend. And that's all she would ever be.
"Did you just apologize?" She asked, laughing. "Wow, you must be crazy today." She looked back at me with a sad smile. "Don't worry about it, Marsh."
I met her big blue eyes, refusing to look away. All I wanted to do was hold her like this. Forever.
But that was something I couldn't do.
