I take a deep breath.It's fine
I could do this...
Standing in the line of gorgeously lean girls, I fiddled with the bottom of my loose T-shirt. Only twenty. Out of at least a hundred slender girls dressed in their sports bras and leggings, they would only pick twenty to dance. Great. I bit my lip. This was the biggest opportunity I had ever had in this hard industry of work. Dancers didn't get big breaks much so this opportunity made me almost pee myself thinking about it.
BTS were big. Bigger than big. Too big for me to possibly work with them. They really blew up after their debut, making them one of the biggest bands ever. My brain was making this up right? This was a dream? This surreal experience was to be a dream? I saw videos and clips of their performances and was stunned. Their technique was flawless and they were so hard-hitting with their moves. I couldn't work with them. I just couldn't.
"174, make your way in please"
A clear voice called from the room.
Wait what?
I wasn't expecting that.
Wouldn't they invite more people in at once? That's what they usually do. It would take a century for everyone to do separate auditions. I wasn't ready for individual examinations! I gulped and feebly made my way into the audition room, lined with mirrors. Two men and a women, all in suits, sat at the front, their eyes sharply traveling up and down, judging and making their first impressions of me.
The woman started writing on a piece of paper. "Name" she said bluntly. " U-um Leila Smith" I answered, hoping I didn't seem as nervous as I felt. "Age" she underlined something vigorously on her paper and looked up, her eyes filled to the brim of boredom. "Twenty" I said. They all looked at each other. "All right" one of the men said while he shuffled the papers on his desk, "show us what you got" I nodded and smiled pathetically while I rushed and put my iPod on the speakers and got the song up.
I squared my shoulders and focused my eyes. I could do this. Make yourself proud.
(LISTEN TO CHORUS OF I NEED U - BTS)
The music started and I gradually went through the routine I had been practicing for weeks. The breathe I had been holding let go and I focused on the dance and only the dance. I glided through each contemporary moves, pivoting and pirouetted through any worries I had before. I let the music flow through my body, muscles and blood and let bits of confidence ripple through my performance.
I made all the moves exaggerated, sharper, faster. I could get this job. I needed this job.
(FINISH)
With the last beat of the music,I finished in a striking pose, staring straight at the examiners, my face red. The woman smiled slightly. "Thank you" I smiled and collected my iPod from the speaker, satisfied with my performance.****************************************************************************************************************
"Libby! Libby! I got the job!" I screamed down the phone. I was walking down Portabello Road in my home city of London on my way to Tesco. The beautiful August sun shone through the trees in pools of light, brightening the pavements. "Wait what!" Libby exclaimed down the phone, "OMG well done! I knew you could do it!". I squeaked as she spoke and jumped as I walked.
I had called my sister straight after I got the call. "When will you be going to Korea to perform and start training and stuff?" Libby asked. I smiled at the thought of travelling on my own, without any pushy Aunt Rose jumping down my throat if I pack the wrong tooth brush.
"At the start of September! I'll stay there till after the new year" I explained. I could hardly wait. "Aaaaawww! I'm so proud of you!" Libby replied, I can imagine her in her uni dorm smiling. "You have come so far my little cupcake!" She said in a baby voice. I chuckled, looking up, letting the suns warmth beam down on my face. "Not like you my sushi roll!" I replied with a giggle.
"How's Aunt Rose?" I asked, crossing the road. Libby groaned . "She visited me last week, UTTER NIGHTMARE! She said I had my bed in the wrong place and when I went out to get some milk to make coffees, she had moved it! Like who does that!" She complained. I chuckled, "All shall love her and despair" I replied. "I mean why did you invite her any way?" I asked.
Neither me, nor Libby likes Aunt Rose one bit. Sure, she raised us when dad died but she made our lives a waking nightmare, telling us were to go, how to dress, who to hang out with. Sorry, *be acquaintances with*. She took over our lives. "Hey! Just because I make an effort to see family doesn't mean I 'asked for it' !" She said accusing me. "Yeah right!" I retaliated, laughing. I sighed. "Anyway I gotta shoot, I need to pick up some groceries" I say. "Alright then, I got mounds of essays and course work to do so I better get on with it instead of procrastinating! Well done for getting the job!" My sister replies. I smile again. "Thanks Libs! See ya!"
I hang up the call and skip down the rest of the street, entering the Tesco. I beamed at the store worker who must have thought I was crazy and pranced around the store, grabbing all the stuff I needed. Everything was going great. I had found a job I loved, my financial situation was good, I loved Libby and living in London, everything was going well, just as it was meant to be.
