Blizzardstar stood silently among the rank of wolves half hidden in shadow, his head bowed like all the others. An annoying stirring was bothering him inside- as if he had forgotten something- yet he quashed it like a piece of prey. This minor nuisance would not deter him from serving the greatest, Shadowstar. Pride warmed his insides as he recalled the memory of coming face-to-face with the mysterious black-furred wolf, an experience few could boast. She had complimented him, released the tendrils that trailed behind him- for what reason he did not know- and told him so much. About how there was one wolf called Pheasantwing, and she had pups that would obey her every command. Pheasantwing was evil, Shadowstar said, and could strike down Blizzardstar if she wished. She could tear him away from Shadowstar, and keep him there. At this, Blizzardstar whimpered. He must not leave Shadowstar! Alone, he was faithful, he was diligent, he would serve her, protect her from that horrible Pheasantwing. But there was another like him, currently holding the position of Shadowstar's most elite: Blackpool, a sly barrier of a wolf, who stood in his way of serving Shadowstar to the greatest of his ability. All the servants of Shadowstar fought for the position of deputy, but among the choicest, an imperfect balance of brute force and cleverness was sure to drag a wolf down into what they considered the "general" ranks. However, there were some that had an unequal balance, yet were favored by Shadowstar and thus considered among the elites. Blizzardstar's thoughts whirled when he remembered such a wolf, a snow-white she-wolf called Swanpelt. He did not like her, even though Shadowstar had promised that Swanpelt could teach him to truly Turn so that he could destroy Pheasantwing. Though, for some reason, the white she-wolf radiated a feeling that caused terror and fury to rise within him- she had taken something away from him, something so dear and precious that he could barely suppress a growl whenever he saw her. However, he just couldn't remember what it was- Blizzardstar assumed that it was the fact that she had stolen the third-paw ranking, though with a little bit of time and effort, this problem could be fixed easily. Suddenly, a tail touched him, sparking him out of his reverie- they were not allowed to move unless Blackpool told them to. A male wolf stood next to him, his gaze fixed on him.
"I've found you at last," he breathed, so softly that Blizzardstar could barely hear him. "Pheasantwing has been pining for you for ages. Your entire Clan has been waiting for you, and Frostfeather needs you." Rage filled Blizzardstar, so great that he let out an angry cry and sprang at the wolf.
"You dare mention Pheasantwing?" he howled, ignoring the surprised sentries. "She is a traitor, unfaithful, and wishes to steal me away from Shadowstar! How dare you! And Frostfeather- she is a wolf sent from Pheasantwing. She is a liar! They all are working for that disgusting she-wolf!" The other wolf stumbled back, eyes widening.
"You... don't remember her?" the stranger gasped. "Or Frostfeather, your deputy? Pheasantwing is your mate! You had pups with her!" Blizzardstar bared his teeth, but an odd memory, accompanied with a foreign feeling, crept into the back of his mind. Playing with a dappled brown she-wolf, and her pups. They climbed all over him, and he was laughing in delight... He shook his head violently. The she-wolf was training her pups to destroy him!
"Leave!" he spat. "I don't know what you're talking about. Pheasantwing is a horrible she-wolf, and I'd never have pups with her! Besides, mates and pups distract me from my duty to Shadowstar. She alone knows my worth to her!" The wolf had a fleeting gaze of surprise and horror on his face before he folded gracefully to the ground. Shadowstar stood behind the intruder, smile creeping about her face.
"Well done, Blizzardstar," she purred softly. "Well done...."
