[Chapter Twenty-Eight]

Regulus remained perfectly still after the two of them heard another howl, only this time, it sounded much closer. The last thing he had expected that evening was coming to face a werewolf, but he had already seen it once. It had sensed his presence in the forest, more than likely sniffing him out and went to attack. Regulus had only been spared because his brother had interfered at the last second, pissing the werewolf off by snapping at it repeatedly. He couldn't believe the scene that had unfolded so quickly, seeing his brother morph into a dog, seeing the others in their animagus forms, Regulus didn't know what to think or how to even process it all.

Despite his anger towards his brother, the feeling of betrayal that coursed through him since Sirius had left home, Regulus couldn't help the fear that he felt, as Sirius attempted to chase the werewolf off to get him away from Regulus. Regulus only wanted to help his brother because he probably would never be able to forgive himself if he simply stood by and watched. But Sirius didn't want him to interfere and that's when Regulus started to place all the pieces together. Noting that James and Peter were around, there was only one missing from the usual four and seeing how the others were trying to protect the werewolf instead of fighting it off with strong magic, Regulus figured it out rather quickly.

The werewolf was not just a random werewolf, it was Remus Lupin, Regulus was willing to bet money on it. When Éponine arrived, Regulus wished he would have felt more relieved to see her, but he actually found himself wishing that they had stood him up because now the girl was in danger as well. Although she seemed to be handling herself just fine as she had already brought James a nosebleed and rendered Sirius unconscious with her stunning spells. However, she finally seemed to process the same theory about it being Remus.

In a moment of panic, Éponine wrapped her arms around Regulus' waist, looking in the opposite direction that Regulus was facing so that she was keeping a lookout in his blind spot. He could feel her body shaking, although he was sure that he was shaking just as much as she was at the time. She had her wand at the ready though, it never seemed to fail that she always seemed prepared to act when she needed to.

"R-R-Regulus, w-w-we should get out of h-here," she stammered, "it's going to come this way. It'll attack us."

She had a point, despite the fact that it was Remus that was the werewolf, a werewolf was never in their right mind during a full moon. Their number one priority was to attack and bite anyone that they could. It was like a frenzy that plagued their minds and it didn't matter who the person was, a friend or foe, they would attack as they couldn't reason with their own minds. Regulus noticed that when Remus had first arrived on the scene to attack that he didn't go about attacking the other boys when they were in their animal forms.

It was rare for a werewolf to attack an animal, so they were deemed safe for the most part. He and Éponine, on the other hand, were far from safe. She was right, they really did need to get out of the forest or they would be at risk for an attack.
