Ring.
Ring.
Ring.
“Hello?” Jason asked in a groggy voice. “Alex? Did little Timmy fall in the well?”
“No, smartass, this is better.” I was practically bouncing as I paced around the living room, my cell phone pressed between my shoulder and my ear. I had my tablet in my hands, frantically searching for a number/email that would allow me to contact Ryder.
“What could be better than little Timmy falling down a well?” He asked smugly.
I dropped onto the couch, taking a deep breath. “I have a twin,” I told him.
Silence. I counted the seconds, holding my breath.

“You’re completely insane, Alex.”
“I’m not kidding!” I shouted, then winced remembering mom’s room was right down the hall. Thankfully, she was a heavy sleeper. “C’mon, you have to believe me,” I begged.
I heard him sigh, and could picture him running a hand through his hair. “Fine, but if you don’t convince me in five minutes, I’m hanging up on you.”
I grinned. “Understandable,” I said, tapping send on my tablet. “Okay, I just emailed you a link to the website Sam found my dad on. It lists Abby Elza, who…” I trailed off, glancing uneasily down the hallway leading off the living room, where my mom was sleeping. I dropped my voice to a whisper. “who may or may not be my biological mom.”
Jason sighed again. “Alex, you’re my best friend, so don’t take this personally, but it’s four in the morning and you’re on a lot of pain medication.”
“Just listen to me,” I whispered harshly. “I googled Abby Elza and was led to a news article about someone named Ryder Elza, who is our age, and his birthday was yesterday.”
“Alex, I have the same birthday as three people in our class, but that doesn’t-”
“Let me finish, dammit!”
“Fine,” Jason huffed. “Do whatever you want. You have two minutes left.”
“Okay, so I read the article and found out Ryder is the lead singer in some hit indie rock band I’ve never heard of: Kick Start,” I continued. “So I then googled him and clicked on his wiki page, and found out that he was also born in Mount Vernon, but on June first. Two minutes before June second.”
