The spaghetti was everything spaghetti wasn't supposed to be. Fine and delicate strands, looped carefully around the plate. Through the window, moonlight streamed through, the pale serenity a stark contrast to the growing turmoil in my stomach.

My left hand hid itself under the table, coated in sweat. I had chosen a modest dress for tonight, but all of a sudden the waist felt too tight, too suffocating. In here, others sat upright and proper, their legs daintily crossed and their napkins carefully folded over their laps. A light chatter swept across the room, and I tried to disguise our awkward attempts at conversation by coating my mouth in creamy sauce and slick noodles.

As we walked out of the restaurant and into the moonlight, Jeffrey's hand extended out, searching for mine. I rubbed my sweaty palms against my jacket before meeting his. With a bit of fumbling, our fingers intertwined, and a smile tugged at our lips.

After we had discovered our feelings for each other, I thought ourselves perfect. We already knew each other better than our own selves. But as the night had progressed, the little awkwardness in my stomach grew into a roaring storm.

The ride home was filled with more silence still. As I stared into the sky passing, I wondered if this would change our friendship forever.

We pulled into my driveway, and Jeffrey's movements were almost robotic as he approached my side of the car. He helped me out of the car, and I blurted out, "I can't take this anymore!"

I instantly regretted it. His usual smile fell, and hurt sprawled around his face.

"I-I didn't mean that!" I said quickly, grasping his arm. His muscles were tense. I tried to explain. "The fancy dinner-"

"You didn't like it?" He asked, voice barely a whisper.

It felt like a cold hand had squeezed my chest. Why did I feel the need to blurt out everything I was thinking? "I-I loved it!"

"So what can't you take anymore, Allie?"

I twisted my hands with each other. "It's just that when we became a couple, we changed from climbing trees to fancy dinners."

There was a split second when all was still, before Jeffrey's face lit up in a crooked grin and filled the chilly night air with his boisterous laughter. "Thank goodness, I hated being in there."

Then I smiled too, and we hugged, but this time it was more fluid. We giggled and fell onto the grass in my front yard. I reached in my purse.

"Remember when we used to stay up all night reading?" I asked, and he smiled. I placed an earbud in his ear and one into mine, pulling up a medieval fantasy book on my phone.

We were on an adventure, facing evil sorcerers and dragons and glimmering treasure. I stared into his eyes, finding my best friend alas.

We lay there all night, hearts touching, below the blanket of the night sky.
