The skies darken with every passing day. We all hide from those who have gone mad and feast on those who have survived. Every night, tears awake us from our light sleep. Fear swallows me whole as I wait for the days to end.

Four months ago a warning spread across the world, telling us to hide. A comet was about to hit the earth, bringing with it, a poisonous gas. I was with my brother at the time. We were running along the bottom of a cliff, when the sky turned red. My mind twisted with confusion, as my brother pulled me into a nearby cave.

After it collided with the earth's crust, and almost killed my brother, all we had to survive off of were the worms squirming on the ground. Weeks later, we finally had the courage to move from the cave and go outside. I could not believe my eyes when I saw that there was nothing left but a few trees, and only a puddle of what had once been huge lake.

Now what we called home was a tunnel that Greg, a man we had met only by chance after the comet hit, had dug out himself. He always goes on about how he knew that our planet would be hit one day. Seven of us now lived buried beneath the earth, so that no Crazies could get to us. Greg has always been a little on the odd side; talks to every one as if he's known them his whole life. Joe is the second oldest, he was in the war for five years before the comet. He's is one of the most serious person I ever met. Nalla is just like my mother. Sweet, caring and always making the worse jokes that I have ever heard, but I still laugh. Jamie is in her 30's I think, she is very reserved. I have only every heard her talk when spoken to. Kyle is Jamie's son and he is just like her except that he doesn't talk at all. Lily is like the little sister I have never had, she is always saying the cutest things. So far we have lived in these tunnels for a month; yet have not seen any other sign of life. Except for The Crazies (we call them).

"Nathan are we going to be in here much longer?" I asked

"I don't know yet Sarah, the Older Ones still have not come to a decision on that."

Nathan patted my head, as he always does and walked away. I felt a slight tug on my pant leg and turned around to find two year old Lily.

"Sarah play! Sarah play with me" giggled Lily

I picked her up and swung her around. Her face brightened up with joy.

"Wee" she shouted "Again, again"

"Not right now little squirt, maybe later"

I gave her a reassuring smile, got up and walked away. The tunnels down here were dark but after a while you got use to it. You could not really walk right beside any one because the tunnels were very small. I walked to the sleep area, it was just at the end of the tunnels and not to big. You could fit about five people in this area, but it was the only place to sleep down here; so we all squished in. In the far left corner of the room laid a big lump. As I walked up to it I heard crying.

"Hello, who are you; Jamie?" I asked but no replied.

After a few moments "Yes, it's me. What are you doing here, aren't you exposed to be filling in cracks in the walls?" her voice trembled ever so slightly.

"Yeah, I just finish my area and thought to come here to get some rest. Why are you here; is something wrong?"

Jamie was the quite one of the group. She insisted on doing things alone, never wanting anyone's help unless it was her Kyles.
