Chapter 2, Roman's Secret
Roman's POV
"It's gonna be ok Virge." I said quietly "I'm here." Good mother of dragons I hope he's ok. He has to be ok. I felt a sudden tugging in my stomach. Thomas was calling. Patton ran over & dropped the first aid kit & ice packs on the foot of the couch "I gotta go help Thomas. Keep an eye on him for us." With that he disappeared leaving traces of pale blue smoke around me. I put the ice on Virgil's worst bruises & put some ointment on the gash across his face. He flinched in his sleep. "Shh" I said trying to soothe him "Don't move. This is going to sting a little but it's for your own good. There see? All done. By the horn of a unicorn! You're burning up!" I got up & went into the kitchen to get a wet cloth. "It's ok Virge." I said sitting down. "I'm back." I continued muttering to him while I dabbed his forehead with a cloth trying to lessen his fever. "Please be ok." I said "I know I always act like I hate you but I really do care about you. You just drive me crazy with your constant worrying. Please don't die. Please don't die. Please. Please. Please." My muttering faded to nothing as I bent over my friend crying. "I'm not gonna die Roman." I heard. "Virgil! You're ok!" I said wiping away my tears. "Ya I am. Where are the others?"
"Helping Thomas with something."
"Oh."
Silence.
"Hey Roman?"
"Ya Virge?"
"Can I trust you with something?"
"Of course. Why do you ask?"
"Um... it's probably better if I just show you."
He sat up & looked me dead in the eyes. He took a deep breathe & closed his eyes. Suddenly dark purple smoke started to billow around him. When the smoke cleared I was staring at Virgil. No not Virgil. It was Virgil. But as a girl. "Ya. This is what a really look like." He. She said looking at me with deep brown eyes. "Wait. You're a girl?"
"Don't look so surprised. The Dark Sides can be any gender. I chose to look like a guy so I would feel like I fit in. so I would be accepted."
"But you are accepted!"
"As anxiety but not as a girl. One thing at a time."
"True. Why didn't you tell us after we accepted you as Thomas's anxiety?"
"I don't know. I guess I was scared. I went through all the possibilities & only one showed you guys accepting me..."
"Well I accept you Virge."
He. She, blushed a deep red.
"Thanks Roman."
"Well since we're exchanging secrets-"
"We're not exchanging secrets Roman."
"Let me have this Virge. Since we're exchanging secrets I might as well tell you... I'm not gay. The other two are but I'm not."
"Ya not all of Thomas's Sides are gay. I kinda already knew you weren't."
"Really?"
"Ya."
"Oh."
What was this feeling in my stomach? I've never met any of Thomas's other sides who weren't trying to destroy me. Suddenly I found myself wishing I had known sooner. Wishing that I could have been there for her sooner. I found myself thinking only of her & her well being. What was wrong with me. Suddenly she was back to looking like a man. "Why'd you change back?" I asked. Moments later I heard "What's up kiddos?" From the other room. "They're back." Virgil said. "Time for dinner."
