Chapter 1

Kira

12 years old

I walked down the stairs of my house, two at a time, carrying my wicker basket in my right hand.

"Kira, don't buy the pears, Agnes gave me some already. Just buy some apples, some tomatoes and small bag of flour. I've got the rest here. Make sure you get back before six thirty," my mother told me once I had reached the bottom of the staircase. I was to go out to the market and buy food, a task I had been forced to do since I was nine.

"Hmph, okay," I grumbled, nodding. I slipped my boots on and left without a single word. From just outside the door, I could hear my mother mumble something about myself being an ungrateful daughter, but I didn't care. I just shrugged it off and kept on walking, my long brown hair flowing in the wind. On the way, I hummed a tune to myself, the tune my father would sing to me when I was little. It was a pity that he died. I really missed him, a lot. He was part of the Survey Corps, so, naturally, he was eaten by a titan. I was only five when he died. As I continued to dig up old memories, my hazel eyes began to water slightly. I shook my head, clearing these thoughts. I couldn't keep bringing it back up; it would only hurt me more

Finally, I reached the market. I first went to Michael's store, to buy the apples and tomatoes. After arguing slightly about the price, I ended up buying six apples and six tomatoes. Next was the flour to buy. I looked around for Arthur's stall; for he was someone who I could always count on for good flour at a good price. Finally, I spotted him amongst the crowd of people. I walked up to him, and asked him for a small bag of flour. He obliged, giving me a small bag for a few coins. I said farewell and wished him all the best, then left the markets, not looking back.

As I turned a corner, a large brute of a boy walked up to me. I shivered. He was huge! If he was to attack me, I would be injured!

"What ya got there in ya basket, girl?" He asked, cracking his neck from side to side. I flinched, walking slowly backwards. "I said, what ya got there in ya basket! Answer me!" I stopped moving and started to breathe quickly.

I gulped some air and quickly said, "Sixapplessiextomatoesandasmallbagofflour!"

"What?" The brute said, edging toward me, cracking his fists.

"Six apples, six tomatoes and a small bag of flour!" I shrieked, edging backwards.

"Do ya mind if I could take them?" He asked menacingly. He lunged towards the basket with one hand, and with the other he held me back. I screamed torrents of curses, over and over.

"YOU SON OF A BITCH! YOU DIPSHIT! YOU FUCKING ASSHOLE! STOP NOW! FUCKING STOP!" I yelled, but he didn't stop.

Suddenly, from out of the blue, someone grabbed the brute by the neck and threw him off of me. He started to kick the shit out of the bully, over and over. I looked over at my savior. He was looked about my age, but shorter and had well groomed black hair. He had dark green eyes and a bored expression. After he was done kicking, as the bully had been knocked out, he picked up the apples that the bully had managed to steal and handed them to me. I placed them in my basket, securing them next to the tomatoes. The boy just stood there, looking slightly bored.

"You have an extremely vulgar mouth for a girl," he said, emotionless.

"And?" I countered.

He didn't reply so we stood awkwardly facing each other, in silence.

Itching to break the awkward silence, I mustered up my courage and said, "Um, anyways, thank you very much! You saved me, and I am extremely grateful. How may I repay you?"

The boy just looked at me with that same, emotionless expression. He said nothing. We just stood there in silence for a little.

"May I at least know your name?" I asked.

He looked at me and said, "Levi... You?"

"Kira," I said, smiling, hoping that if I acted cheery the boy called Levi would stop looking so emotionless and creepy. Levi just looked at me strangly. "What?" I asked, questioning the way he was looking at me.

"Why are you smiling?" He asked, tilting his head, confused. "You just got attacked by someone!"

"I am smiling, Levi, because I am grateful for your help."

"Tch. You are strange, Kira."

"I know."

Levi just looked at me, and I could swear that the corners of his lips twitched upwards at my words. Before I could say anything, the clock tower boomed, signifying that it was exactly six o'clock in the evening. I related back to my mother's words, "Make sure you get back before six thirty."

"Levi, thank you. I must go now. I hope I will see you again," I said, smiling. Levi just nodded.

"I'm sure you will," He said, and with one swift motion, he turned around and walked away.

That was the first time I saw Levi.

And it definitely wasn't the last.
