My hands shook as I turned the oddly oily pages.
I couldn't believe what I had found.
In the cemetery, no less, as I was out on my Sunday morning walk with Styx.
It was lying right there in the path, clearly having dropped out of someone's backpack or coat pocket. It was a chilly fall day and the school was only a few blocks down the road, so teenagers like myself often haunted the peaceful wooded cemetery.
I'm a naturally curious person, to the point of being a little obsessive about secrets and mysteries, so I snatched the old book right up.
It was clearly a journal, bound in brown leather. It didn't have a lock or anything like that, so I opened it.
It was dated a few years back, I saw as I scanned the first page. Then my eyes widened as I read the inscription beneath the date.
'2009
If You read this
You will die.'
I had immediately slammed the book closed and stuffed it into my own jacket pocket. I glanced around but saw no one. Then I had run home with Styx as fast as my legs would carry me.

"Brooklyn."
My mom called my name, but I went blazing by on my way up the stairs.
"Cant talk right now, Mom! Gotta study for a big test!" I prided myself in not being a liar, but right then I would have said anything to be left alone, just long enough to get the journal somewhere safe.
Slamming my bedroom door, I locked it then went to the window and drew down the blinds. That was key, considering who my neighbor was.
I tore off my jacket then sat down on the floor with my back to the side of my bed.
Here I was, holding the leather bound journal. The material reminded me of the leather jacket he often wore...
My hands were shaking so bad, I could barely open the darn thing.
Once I had managed the task, I stared down at the warning on the first page again.
I knew whose diary this was.
I knew that handwriting and the twisted mind behind it.
Dalton Patricelli.
My neighbor, my tormentor, the biggest, most clichéd jackass bad boy that you will EVER meet, and my life-long crush.
