"Too many books...!" I groaned, emphasizing each word, before I went through shelf after shelf with the dust buster. The library smelled like leather-bound books, old stamps, and chalkboard sponges, but I didn't know why, because I couldn't see neither any stamps nor chalkboards. However, as expected in a library, there were books enough to educate an entire school.
It was getting pretty warm inside, since the room was bathing in sunlight from a blue sky. So I opened the window to let in some air, and the wonderful feeling of early spring welled into the room. It was like an energy boost that made me burst with joy for no reason at all, and I started humming on a song from my childhood. And not long after, I started dancing, too.

Touch me
How can it be?
Believe me
The sun always shines on TV
Hold me
Close to your heart
Touch me
And give all your love to me
To me

I held the long falsetto while I made a pirouette that ended with a tiny jump in appreciation of the sun. I really needed this after such a dreadful night. I still remembered the girl, no matter how hard I tried to erase her from my memory. And the relief when I found the attic door unlocked almost made me emotional. One thing was certain, I would never set my foot in that attic again. And that girl? May God help her because I was certainly not going to!

"Now, why haven't I seen any TVs in this house?" I wondered. I had to talk to myself, since I was alone all day. And the few I tried to talk to kept disappearing in the middle of the conversation. But it was alright, though, because I'd heard that you get the best answers when you talk to yourself.
"No TVs and no phone. Not even a radio. And I thought this was a fancy place?" I muttered with sarcasm in thick layers. But I kept dusting and humming until I came to the windowsill. There I had to use both hands to move a bust of a man. And it was heavy as shit!
"That's the body weight of a full-sized man and not just his head," I huffed and shuddered. That was just grotesque. Then I studied it closer.
"Why on earth is everybody so goddamn serious in this house? Is it illegal to smile?"
I thought about Leo and Mrs. Lee. The closest thing to a smile had been a vague grin that didn't even reach their eyes.
"I smile."
The voice came out of nowhere and startled me so badly that I lost both the dust buster and my breath.
"Oh, my god!" I exclaimed, and my eyes flew through the room without finding the source of the unexpected voice. Not surprisingly, I saw no one.
