So you can imagine them better: Nova has light brown hair with dyed dark blue tips. She also has dark green eyes. She isn't perfectly skinny; she has a little (only a little) bit of chub to her stomach and thick thighs. Miles has dark brown hair. He also has grey/blue eyes. Even though he hates working out and is super lazy and loves food he is still pretty muscular.  I hope that helps you imagine them, but it's your imagination so imagine them however you would like.

Writing prompt: "It's only on fire a little bit.... you can still use it..."

"Nova!" I hear Miles yell. "Nova ova ova!" He yells repeating the last part of my name as if it echoed. I roll my eyes. He can act like a 6 year old sometimes, but I still love him. I start slowly walking down the stairs. Just as I'm about at the bottom step Miles shows up at the bottom of the stairs. He looks up at me and opens his mouth as if he is about to speak, but before his first word is out of his mouth I interrupt him. "Don't say a word. I'm almost on the bottom step and I need to concentrate which I can't do if you speak." I glance up at him as he rolls his eyes at me.

"Why would you need to concentrate to walk down the stairs Nova?" He asks me.

"Miles what did I just say? No talking! I need to concentrate on walking slowly down the stairs so I can annoy you." I reply with a little grin.

As I step on the last stair Miles sounding annoyed asks. "Can I speak now?"

I look at him as he stands in front of me and proudly grin. "Yes of course you can."

All of a sudden his face lights up. "I have a great idea!" He says excitedly.

"Whats your great idea Miles?"

"We should make a bonfire and set things we don't need on fire." He says with a proud nod.

I look at him in disbelief. "And where are we making this fire?"

"Outside in your fire pit." He says in a duh tone.

"Oh OK, you mean the fire pit that is meant to make s'mores in and not meant to set things on fire in?" I ask sarcastically.

He nods. "Yeah that exact fire pit."

I shrug and give in. It sounds like fun. "If we're doing this then we need to go to the store to get the supplies."

He grabs my hand and starts pulling me out the door like an excited little kid. Like I said he acts like a 6 year old, especially when he is excited. We get in his black truck and head for the store.

When we get to the store he parks and jumps out. I get out and walk over to him while asking myself why fire sounds like so much fun to him. He starts telling me what he thinks we will need to do this. We walk in the doors and he immediately starts questioning where the supplies are. "I don't know. This is your idea I thought you would know." I tell him. He shrugs and walks off in the direction he thinks we should go. This is going to be a long trip.

An hour and a half later we are on our way back to my house. While at the store Miles even got somethings he thought would be fun to burn. Like a duck stuffed animal.

"Why a duck stuffed animal?" I asked him when he showed it to me.

Do you want to know what he said?

He said "Because ducks do the work of Satan." I didn't want to ask any more about the duck after that. He has never really liked ducks, and he has never told me why he doesn't like ducks.

By the time we got back to my house I was getting excited for this plan too. We ran to my backyard and started setting things up. I ran up to my room to grab a teddy bear that a guy who broke my heart got me. In return he got a broken nose from Miles though so it's fine. When Miles saw what I grabbed he started laughing. I just stood there with a smile on my face watching him laugh. When he finally stopped laughing he told me he had something to grab from his house. He came back 20 minutes later with a stuffed duck I gave him when we were 15 as a joke. It was right after I found out he hated ducks. Once I saw it I started laughing.

By the time we got the fire started it was 7 at night and it was getting dark. We set some chairs up, but we didn't sit in them yet. We decided to burn the duck stuffed animal that we bought today first. We threw it in and the fire grew, so we took a step away. "Whoa, that was so awesome!" Miles exclaimed.

"What are we burning next?" I asked him as I watched the fire flicker with wide eyes. It was so pretty with the orange, red, and yellow colors mixing together in a dance.

"I think the teddy bear should burn next." He decides as he turns to look at me with an excited look in his eyes. He seems so happy to be doing this that I just smile and nod my head in agreement to keep him happy. I grab the teddy bear and throw it in. We stood there watching it burn together. All this smoke and heat made my throat dry up so I told Miles that I was going to grab us some water bottles.

I walked into the kitchen and grabbed a couple of water bottles from the fridge. No matter how weird this sounds I feel like it's making us closer which is confusing because we're just burning things and we've been best friends for ten years. As I'm walking back out I hear Miles exclaim "Oh god no!"

"Miles what did you do?" I asked as I opened the screen door. I walked out and saw a chair on fire. "Miles how in the hell did you catch a chair on fire!"

He looked over at me with innocent eyes. "I picked it up and was moving it, but I got to close to the fire and now the chair is on fire. I swear I didn't mean to."

"Miles!" I yelled. He gave me a panicked look.

"It's only on fire a little bit.......you can still use it." He innocently suggests. I give him a look.

"It's a chair on fire Miles! I can not still use it!" I yelled as I turned on the hose and started spraying the chair. Once the fire was out and the hose was turned off. I walked over to see the damage. "Miles?"

"Yes Nova?" He asked as he came up beside me.

"Do not pick up chairs and walk close to the fire ever again please."

"Yes Nova." He replies. "I am really sorry though."

"It's ok, but you're buying me a new chair tomorrow."

"Of course I am." He replies. I turn to look at him and he looks so sad. He looks like a sad puppy.  I can see that he feels really bad about burning the chair. It makes me upset that he's so sad when he was so happy ten minutes ago. He is also avoiding my eyes. I grab his face and force him to look at me. "Miles it's really ok. Don't worry about the chair. It was old anyways." He looks me in the eyes and then wraps his arms around me in a hug. I wrap my arms around his waist and take a deep breath. This has been a crazy day.

"Thanks." I hear Miles whisper into my hair.

"Why are you thanking me?" I ask him as I pull away from his hug.

"For making me feel like less of a screw up." He whispers. He still looks like a hurt puppy.

"You're not a screw up. You make things better." I tell him. I can see his spirits lift so I smile at him and say. "Ready to burn another duck stuffed animal?" He smiles and grabs the other duck to throw in. Tonight I've learned that my best friend feels like a screw up and I won't stand for that. He will feel better by the end of the year before we go to college. I'll make sure of it.
