I wake up and soon remember the events of the previous day. I go to my canoe and get out my fishing lines. I set up my lines in the creek and streams running all over the island. I go looking around the island to see if there is food of any kind here. As a start to reach the foot of the island I see smoke from a fire. I start to sneak up to investigate but I lose sight of the smoke so I decide to go back to where I set up camp.

I hear a cannon go off in the distance. I run toward the edge of the island and make sure I'm hidden so no one on the river can see me. I see a steamboat off in the distance firing into the water. There looking for my body. There firing into the water hopping for my body to rise to the surface. As the steamboat is real close to me I get a good look at whose on it. My pap and many other folk from the town are on it. They keep going just past the end of the island and then dock.

I head to my camp to eat some breakfast. As I take some bread out from my canoe and begin to eat I turn around and see someone hiding behind a tree. From the quick glance I got they looked to be a boy maybe a year or two younger than me. I called out for them to stay put and I didn't mean no harm but as I slowly began walking towards them they climbed on up the tree they were hiding behind. They climbed the quickest I ever seen anybody climb before. I climbed up the tree to a branch right across from them.

I looked at him and stuck out my hand for him to shake. He looked at it for a while than shook it and said I'm Joe. I told them I was Huck. He told me he left town as he wanted an adventure. He told me how he lived in St Petersburg too and went to school there. We got to know each other more and I told him all about my family and explained why I was on the island. I looked at him and then realized he weren't no boy at all but in fact a girl. I asked why she'd lied and said she was a boy. She told me she didn't like the pretty gowns and frock. She said that boys could rip un around and play in mud but girls are forced to cook and clean inside. She told me how when she moved to St Petersburg she cut her hair short and dressed and acted like a boy because she had no family left to say she was a girl so she told everyone she was a boy. I asked if her name was Joe and she nodded and said its short for Joesophine. She made we swear not to tell anyone and I agreed because I wasn't going back to that town.

We climbed down from the tree and she told me she was going into town and asked if I wanted anything. I said maybe just some food she nodded and with that she was off. As I watched her run off into the distance I noticed it was getting dark. I checked my lines and in total I'd caught 3 fish. I re set the traps and with that I sat waiting for Joe to come back.

-Tom's pov-

I see my brother Sid talking Joe Reynolds a boy from school. Joe punches him in the face and then goes and sits down on a bench. I walk up to the bench and sit next to him. He asks if I wanted to come with him to the store and I told him I would just give him a few things from my place and that my family wouldn't mind. I give him a pack of candles, some matches, a loaf of bread, 1 pound of ham, jam, honey and two slices of cake. I know he has no family and can barley afford to buy food. We go and talk and laugh on the rivers edge. We see a steamboat come in and dock. Many fancy people are aboard wearing elegant clothes. I ask Joe if he want to stay the night but he tells me he's going across to Jackson Island for a few days until schools back on. He asks if I want to join him but I say no as Huckster funeral is on Sunday. He says he has to go and we both say goodbye to each other. I watch him as he runs off into the distance.
