Kai splatted blood-red nail polish on her foot for about the seventh time before I finally gave in and picked up the brush and placed her foot on my knee. “So that guy you met at swim practice?” I cheekily pestered her, looking up briefly from my handiwork.
“Oh would you please stop bringing that up? He’s just a perv who flirts with every girl there,” she said for the millionth time.
“Girlie, when you first talked about him all you could say was how special he made you feel. This argument is coming from nowhere. Just flirt back like usual and you’ll be a couple as always with these kind of things.”
“As always? No guys ever like me!” Kai protested with the its-the-end-of-the-world voice I detested so much. The flipping of her poker straight side ponytail didn't help.
“Everything’s always so dramatic for you! you live in the moment too much, which is something I never thought I would say." Now that I think about it, maybe I should be more like Kai. I’m a pushover with new people instead of opening up to the possibility of a new crush, or friend even, unless we have something major in common. I managed to make friends at school after moving to Phoenix, but people I met otherwise would never have a chance with me.
“Oh my gosh he’s calling me!” Kai squealed. “Should I answer?” My look gave her the obvious answer. Kai rushed into the hall for privacy as she turned off her Niki Minaj ringtone.
Since my parents had bought me a wifi stick thing that works everywhere, I was the only one in the cabin with a useable computer. Everyone had gone on a hike, leaving me behind with Kai to fix her crisis, and now even she was preoccupied, so I was alone to reach the outside world for a while.
Just as I was about to open facebook to check the comments on pictures of everyone that drove with me to the cabin cuddling my sock monkey, I heard the popping-bubble sound of a skype call.
“EYLA!!!!!” Eleanor's voice rang out, although I couldn't see her yet.
“That's my line! Although you probably already knew I was gonna say that.” We both laughed since we do think alike most of the time.
“So how's it going in that frigid place?”
I could hear another voice in the background, and it wasn't Ellie's parents or brothers so I chose to ignore her question. “Who's in your room?”
“Huh? Oh, its just Ben.” knowing she wouldn't get away that easily she continued without waiting for me to retaliate, “He came over so we could start our projects together to avoid doing them during the actual week we're supposed to.”
Raising my eyebrows I blatantly asked, “I didn't realize you two just hung out...or is this like a first date?”
“Shut your lips or he'll hear you!” Ellie panicked, “and this isn't the first time, just the first at one of our houses.” She made to sure to whisper this, looking over her straight red hair to the door to see if he was back yet.
“Don't worry, he's probably more aware than you are. Although knowing you two, it'll still be a long while before you actually become a couple....”
“Okay moving on from this subject, when are you gonna be back? It's been so long since I've seen you!”
“I'm only going to be here in the cabin for another day before I get on the plane, I'm surprised my parents let me come actually, after all I'm not around at home much with school being here.... I can't wait to get there, I obviously need to catch up with your life!”
Kai opened the door to the bunkbed-filled room I'd neglected to sleep in last night, “Aphie is looking for you, she's on the front porch.” She said this pretty quickly and I was going to ask why until I realized she was still on the phone with her swimming buddy. Typical.
“You heard that right?” Ellie nodded immediately. “I'll call you when I get home, love ya Ells!” Ben came back into the room where Ellie was which caused her to have quite a panic attack. She disconnected before I had the chance to.
If you're wondering, Ellie and Ben, otherwise known as Bella or Ellen, will come up later in the story. You'll just have to wait and see. Please comment! -BeatriceButterfly
