RACHEL'S POV

I wake up and check my phone to see what time it is. '7:03 AM'. Perfect. I quietly jump off of the top bunk so I don't wake up my best friend, Kelsey, sleeping on the bottom. I come to this house every summer. A few years ago, when my brother left for college, we invited Kelsey and her parents to join us. She is an only child, and my brother isn't here, so it is just six people. I slowly walk over to the twin size bed that we keep our luggage on, somehow avoiding the full sized one parallel to it in the dark, and grab my swimming suit. It is a pink bikini with white polka dots and a red cherry on the right hand side. I slip my crocs on and walk down the rock pathway to a wooden staircase. I walk down the 103 steps and take my shoes off, sitting down on the edge of the pier overlooking the small lake. I sit there for what feels like five minutes, observing nature; the birds and squirrels frolicking in the trees, and the small fish and snapping turtles in the water. It really is beautiful here.

"Hello, the lake!" Kelsey yells from the deck of the house. There is a wooden deck that goes around the whole house, so she is standing at the edge yelling at me.

"Hello, the house!" I yell. It's a tradition type thing we have. Instead of walking down the many stairs to tell someone something, you shout 'hello, the lake' and if you hear them, you respond 'hello, the house'.

"You know how I was telling you that we were getting new neighbors this year?" she shouts to me.

"Yeah!" I shout loudly so she knows to speak up.

"They're here to visit and say hello! They're talking to our parents right now! They're guys and they are really cute!" she shouts.

"Good for you! If they wanna say hi, I'll be right here!" I say and lay back on the pier. I can just see her rolling her eyes. So I'm not very social. So what?

"What time is it?" I ask.

"10:30!" she says. I've been looking at the lake for over three hours now. Whoa. I start looking at the clouds when two mating dragonflies fly past me. Lucky.

"I'm jealous of a dragonfly," I mutter under my breath.

"Why?" a boy asks me. I turn around to see a cuban looking boy with a blonde streak in the front of his hair. I chuckle a little.

"It's nothing, and it's silly," I say. "You can come sit, if you want." I motion to the empty spot next to me. He walks over and sits by me. He holds out his hand.

"I'm Gabe. I'm one of your new neighbors," he says. I take his hand and shake it.

"I'm Rachel," I say.

"Rachel," he says with a raspy voice.

"Okay, Batman. So, how many of you are there?" I ask.

"Four besides me. All boys," he says.

"Joy," I say.

"You are definitely not like Kelsey. She practically swooned when she saw us," he says and I laugh.

"Kelsey is boy crazy. Any guy slightly hot, she freaks out," I say and it is his turn to laugh.

"So I'm not hot?" he asks, pretending to be offended.

"I said that that is what Kelsey does. I don't care how hot the guy is. I just want to find somebody who truly loves me. Someone who would do anything for me to make me happy," I say and he nods.

"Have you ever been in love?" he asks me and I shake my head.

"That, my friend, is why I am jealous of two dragonflies. They have a lifespan of about a week and they find someone. I've been alive," I say and start counting on my fingers. "917½ times longer than they have and I still haven't found the right person. That's really hard to think about," I say.
