Chapter 9

“Rise and shine!” The sound of curtains being pulled apart was heard before the sun beamed on my face. It had been just over a week since I had met with Jules and just over a week from when Ramel told me about the conversation he had overheard. Ever since I had been attempting to put two and two together to figure out what the conversation had been about.

‘What about Carlos?...

‘What about him? It has to be done’….

‘She doesn’t want part of it any longer and she’s out of the plan.

Fail. I mean it just didn’t add up. Each time I sat down and reviewed the situation, I came to a blank. I mean my parents loved each other…didn’t they?

The duvet enveloped me more as the beams of light shone through the curtains, I wasn’t ready to wake up…not just yet anyways.

“Rayne Roy-” Once the full name began to be mentioned I realised if I didn’t get up within the second there would be problems.

I glared at my mother with a questioning look planted on my face.

“It’s time to get up!” I tightened my eyes and thought about all the things I had planned today. No one of them had anything to do with my mom. Shrugging her screeches to the back of my mind I pushed myself deeper into my duvet.

“Rayne, do not make me repeat myself. Get up we have things to do!” She screeched out again. I shot up as the noise pierced my ear. Why my mother was acting like a teenage girl, I would never understand, but she was happy…

I sat up straight and stared her down.  It just didn’t add up, my mom was a beautiful woman...she was loyal and had been to my pops for the duration of their marriage. Vice Versa with my father. So what had changed? Had they gotten bored with each other? Was it me? Or was it Ramel? It had to be Ramel, I mean come on I was Rayne. I was never the mistake. I felt a mild headache slowly but surely begin to form. If I ever wanted to be able to rest I would just need to ask. Ask and you shall receive right?

“Mom, I’ve had a lot on my mind recently and I…I…okay well I don’t know how to ask but a little while back I overheard you and Big Mike talking in the guest room downstairs.” I paused mid-sentence to view how her body language had changed. I could feel this day about to take a turn for the worse. “And I overheard you guys talking about a plan or a plot even against pops and it’s been bothering me ever since and then Ramel also heard something similar to what I heard that night. Even that night where you and pops were arguing and you were shouting about how can Dad trust Big Mike…I mean it all adds up! I know it was wrong for us to be eavesdropping but-“

“Stop right there! You’re right! Who the hell do you think you are eavesdropping on me? Am I not the mother and you the child? Who do you think you are Rayne? So now I’m not trusted to walk around my own house, is that what you’re trying to tell me? Okay I understand. You have the audacity to question me on my actions as if you know any better, sleeping with your brother’s friend.” She glared down at me, anger, and worry and pain the three emotion clear on her face. The silence that came after was overwhelming.  She cleared her throat before speaking once more. “Now, once again we have a lot to do in the few hours that we are  given in a day so get up take a shower and tidy up your rooms a mess.” With that said she walked off.

McDonalds in hand, I dragged my feet as I followed my mom into what looked like a bridal store. I refused to ask my mom any questions for fear of what she may say. We stepped in to be met by the owner of the bridal store.

“Roselle Quinns!”

“Denise” It was clear that this wasn’t their first consultation. The quickly embraced while I stood there awkwardly attempting to blend into the shadows. “This is my daughter Rayne.” I waved quickly before pushing the fries into my mouth.

“So what will it be today?”

“I would like to try on my dress and Rayne will be trying on the dress that I designed for you when I sent in her measurements” I paused. This was the first I had heard of this? But I still refused to make a comment. Denise nodded before calling out for an assistant who walked out two dress bags in hand.

She handed the bigger one too my mom who walked into the back room. We all waited in silence for her to step out. 10 minutes had come and gone when she finally stepped out. I glared at the dress in silence, it was EVERYTHING. The dress had a strawberry neck line and it had just enough diamantes and they were all lined up in the right places. The bottom half now was my favourite, with it being a mermaid style dress with a lace trail descending from the back. The trail was at least 3 metres long. I released the breathe that I didn’t know I was holding in.

“Its beautiful mom…I mean you look beautiful. But its white…are you even allowed white dress?” The words slipped out of my mouth before I could stop myself. Everyone paused awaiting her response.

Once again she glared at me her eyes burning a whole straight through my forehead. “Go try on your dress Ray.” I grabbed the dress bag and rushed into the changing room.

Taking a deep breath I slowly unzipped the bag.                The dress was…amazing. It was a sleeveless red and white block dress that was floor length. The highlight of the dress for me was the slit that went from the middle of my thigh down. It wasn’t your typical bridesmaid dress but it was very much me.

I pulled it on excited to try it on. It was tighter than I expected…a lot tighter. At that moment, I didn’t know what to do.

Stepping out into the main room I carefully tried my best not to tread on the dress.

“Yes! Denise its everything I imagined!” My mom screeched out. “Perfect fit also” I looked at her like she was crazy.

“Mom! Perfect fit really?  I can’t breathe!” I rushed out as she stared at me once more.

“Stop making everything about you Rayne! The dress is fine.” I looked at her in shock before rushing back to get changed. The quicker I got changed the quicker I got out of here.

 **

The ride home was a silent one, we had gotten almost half way before I decided that it was time to say something.

“Mom, I’m really sorry about what happened this morning.”

“No need to apologise, you were looking out for your father. If you really want to know what’s going on. Go and ask Big Mike, I’m sure he’ll be more than happy to fill you in”
