From the first time Anakin had a nightmare on their way to Coresaunt, he didn't seek out comfort from anyone. Obi-Wan had heard the gut wrenching sobs that were muffled by the boy's pillow. He had gone over to the child, picked him up, sat with the boy in his lap, and hugged him gently.
"Hello there, Anakin. It will be fine. You have nothing to fear from Qui Gon. Unless you hate potted plants, then you will be fine." Obi rubbed the boy's back, noticing the flinch and stiffness of the boy he had already bonded with. He sighed softly when the boy started to struggle weakly, recovering from the shock of a stranger showing him kindness.
"I, I don't need to be held like a baby!" Anakin was not happy, Obi-Wan just held the boy closer.
"Why are you crying, little one?" Obi-Wan wanted to fix this situation before others woke up, namely his master. He would never hear the end of it if he was found cradling the boy.
"I had a..." The last part of the sentence was mumbled too quietly.
"Could you repeat that, love?" Obi-Wan's voice was filled with love for the small child. He was stunned by the boy's size. For a five year old, the boy was much too small.
"Nightmare." The younger male buried his face in the tunic of the older one. Obi-Wan continued to rub his hand on the boy's back in a soothing way, sending love and comfort through the small bond. The boy cried for a while, Obi-Wan comforting him. When the boy had stopped crying and hiccuped occasionally, Obi-Wan stood up with his charge in his arms, heading to the kitchen. He made warmed milk with honey, which the boy drank. Anakin didn't let go of the first person who had comforted him since he was born, his mother ignoring him for the pain he had brought to her. He loved the way Obi-Wan's voice made him feel safe. He fell into a deep sleep, still clutching the tunic and trying not to shiver too much.
'The boy's from a desert planet. He must be freezing.' Obi-Wan started to assess the child and even worry about the little one to whom he was becoming attached to. He bundled the child up in blankets, laid on the sofa with the boy on his chest, and joined the young one in slumber.
This was how Master Jinn found the two. He couldn't wake them up, absolutely not. It wasn't because of the lack of sleep his padawan had suffered from for weeks or the fact that the two were completely at peace. The force sang around the two. Master Jinn knew that Anakin was never meant to be his padawan but Jinn would still insist to the Council that the boy be trained. He had been lost in thought for hours, planning every outcome and possible solution. He hadn't noticed when Obi-Wan woke up until the weak bond had been pulled on.
"Good morning, Master. I am going to get breakfast with Anakin." Obi-Wan had effortlessly stood with the bundled up child in his arms never even waking up. Master Jinn was shocked.
"Of course, Obi-Wan. I will accompany you after I speak to the Council. We are still two days away from the Temple." Jinn left the two, made a brief transmission to the Council, and joined the pair in the cafeteria. He smiled at the way Obi-Wan held the child protectively, oblivious to the stares of others. Anakin made Obi-Wan laugh, the two obviously planning something. Anakin's plate was barely touched, a fact Obi-Wan was subtly trying to rectify. The next two days found the pair inseparable, Obi-Wan constantly hovering over the boy.
"Anakin, please strap in. We can look at the city once we've landed." Obi-Wan was definitely not begging the child to strap in. Anakin listened to him, a blank stare directed at the buckles. Obi-Wan places the child in the seat and buckled him in.
The landing was smooth, Obi-Wan was green, and the reception was slightly awkward. Anakin hid behind Obi-Wan when Senator Palpatine had tried to talk to the boy. Obi-Wan got a warning from the force about the man, allowing Anakin to remain behind his leg. The Council was a nightmare. They were wary of the child and refused to allow him to be trained. The Master, padawan, and Anakin were sent to Naboo. Anakin accidentally destroyed the control ship, Obi-Wan killed the first Sith to appear in thousands of years, Qui Gon died, and Naboo was saved. Obi-Wan was knighted in front of the Council, shocking them all when he declared Anakin as his padawan. The Council tried to persuade him that it was unwise, others would challenge his right to the boy. Obi-Wan laughed at them, stated it was the will of the force and had to fight three esteemed Council members.
He had somehow managed to defeat them, bowed to the others, and collected Anakin to head to their rooms. Anakin was quiet, meek, and extremely prone to flinch at loud noises. Obi-Wan,concerned for Anakin, had finally decided to take the child to a healer after a month of this behavior.
When Anakin had learned of this, he had panicked. He begged Obi-Wan not to take him. He would be good. He would be the perfect slave, do anything, would never rebel. The older male held the crying and terrified child as they made their way to the healers. He had asked them to do a thorough check, leaving nothing unseen in the exam. Anakin was sedated for the exam and would be sedated until Obi-Wan returned from the two duels he had to fight today. He would not loose Anakin. He returned three or four hours later, covered in scratches, bruises, and a lightsaber burn received from the duels.
Before Anakin woke up, Obi-Wan had been treated and informed of the slave chip embedded into the base of Anakin's brain. The boy had many bones that had been reset, scar tissue that could never be healed, severe malnutrition that would never truly be sorted out, and possible lapses into what was called the little mindset. Anakin would behave like a young child for years because of the traumas he had suffered. Obi-Wan took the news calmly, loving the child even more. He would always protect his child.
