"Hi, Mama," Fawn says. Mama Allie looks up at her. "Who are you?" Mama Allie asks with a shaky hand pointing. "It's me, Fawn," Fawn holds back her tears. "Are you a talking animal?" Mama Allie asks. She quints her eyes to look at Fawn. "You don't look like an animal." Fawn wipes her eyes. She kisses her mama on the head, then takes off. Before Fawn has completely left the room, she looks back at Mama Allie one more time.
Fawn makes her way through the ally-way, dodging dumpsters, and piles of boxes. Terence stands in front of her, his back turned. "Rawr!" Fawn says. Terence jumps and turns to Fawn. She laughs. "Oh man, I got you that time," Fawn chuckles. "Haha,'' Terence says sarcastically. "You ready? Saf hates waiting!" "Yeah, I just had to say bye to Mama," Fawn sighs. Terence gives a face that clearly asks, "What's wrong?" "She's forgetting less and less every day," Fawn says. "Yesterday she thought I was Miley, today she thought I was an animal." Terence gives a "that sucks" face.
The two wander off into the city. They go down their usual route. An old red, Volkswagen waits for them at the corner. The driver honks the horn at them. They quicken their speed into a jog. Quickly Fawn and Terence pile into the backseat. Saf turns back to them. "Why are you late?" she asks. "We're 2 minutes late," Terence says. "You'll manage." Saf rolls her eyes. "Oh, this is Peter," Saf gestures to the man in the front seat. The man turns around. He waves. "Hey. Safiya told me about you guys. Are you really homeless?"
Terence and Fawn look at each other. "Yeah, more than less," Fawn says. Peter nods then turn back to the front seat. The car has already been moving. They are stuck at a busy intersection. Saf honks her horn at the slow people in front of her. "If these idiots knew how to drive, we wouldn't be even later!"
"We'll get out here, we can go the rest of the way. Traffic is too busy," Fawn says. Saf contemplates whether she should let them go. With a nod of approval, Terence and Fawn make their way out of the car. They wave back to Saf, telling her goodbye. In a quick speed, the teens take off to their destination.
After running around for a few minutes, they come across a construction site. "Ah, this wasn't here before!" Terence grumbles. "We have to go the long way. Miss Mae will understand." "15 tardies this year, and it's only second quarter," Fawn says. "But, we have to make it to school!"
After arriving at school, the bell rings just as they step foot on campus. They run as fast as they can to get to their first-period class. They slide into their seats, behind the teacher's back. "Late again I see," Miss Mae says. "Sorry Miss Mae, the new construction site made us go the long way," Terence says.
"I understand, I'll dismiss it this time," Miss Mae says not changing her facial expression at all. Fawn and Terence fist bump. They slow down their breathing form running, calming their hearts to a normal speed.
