The Rise of a New Team

Chapter 3

Paiton shot fire at Alex but he dodged before slipping on some ice that she’d surrounded him with. He groaned as he stood back up and sent a ring of energy towards her and Paiton blocked the blast with more flames that were white hot, the energy disk disintegrated from the heat and Alex tried to move while the flames where blocking him from her sight but the fire blocked him to that half of the training room.

            “When do I get to see you fight your brother?” Paiton shouted over the flames.

            “I don’t know we don’t really get along so soon most likely.”

            Paiton smirked and shortened the flames enough to shoot ice over it, she was met with the sound of a body falling to the ground, after making the flames disappear completely she ran over to where he was getting back up and started laughing.

            “You gave me your location by talking.”

            Alex cursed, “I can’t believe I let you distract me…”

            “Come on let’s go find the others, I want to see some of them spar.”

            She helped him up before leading the way out and into the halls where the classes were held, they found Cyclops first and he walked over to them.

            “What are you wearing?” Alex laughed.

            “It’s our suits.”

            “I like them, our old ones had a lot of yellow.” Paiton said as she studied the suit.

            “I guess…” Alex agreed. “But how did… telepathy…”

            “You are correct. Havok, but I already knew you’d want to help others still so I had them made after you got back.” Professor X said wheeling up to them.

            “Professor.” Cyclops greeted. “I thought you were teaching a class?”

            “Storm took over. But since you seem to have so much free time perhaps you should take your brother’s advice and train.”

            “Of course.”

             Cyclops followed them back down to the training room, Paiton fell back to walk with him and talk about the new team.

            “So has Charles said who the new leader is?” She asked.

            “I am.” He replied.

            “Why, we are the more experienced.”

            “Because if he dies Havok will take over running the school and leaving you in charge of the old team.”

            “What?” She looked at him in shock, searching for any sign of what he said being a lie but his face was serious.

            Alex opened the door and immediately ducked his head as a cinder block flew out of the room, “Guys look out!”

            “What?” The block stopped right before hitting Cyclops in the face and Jean ran out of the training room.

            “Sorry Scott, I didn’t know someone was going to open the door.” Jean apologized before making the cinder block float back inside and onto the floor.

            Cyclops shrugged and went inside with the others, after a small debate Paiton finally got Alex and his brother to spar together, Jean stood beside her and watched as they got into fighting positions. Alex attacked first by sending multiple disks of energy at his brother but Cyclops stood there unharmed, he retaliated with a laser beam from his eyes but once again nothing happened.

            “Why aren’t their attacks working?” Paiton asked Jean.

            “They’re protected from their own powers and since their powers are both similar they don’t get hurt.”

            Paiton turned back to the fight in time to watch the brothers’ attacks collide, they both fought to gain the upper hand while ignoring the growing spot where the energy was meeting. Jean pulled Paiton back as she retreated closer to the side, the energy build up kept getting bigger and Paiton put up a large ice shield right before the energy exploded. Cyclops and Alex were flung back and Paiton had to put more ice in front of them as the heat melted through, when the light faded Jean and Paiton let out the breath they’d been holding and saw the other two standing up.

            “Chaos, Jean!” Cyclops shouted as he ran over to them. “Are you okay?”

            “We’re fine, I put up a shield.” Paiton told him.

            “Are you sure you’re okay? I remember you’d feel sick…” Alex trailed off as he moved between her and his brother.

            “I got stronger, as you’ve noticed.”

            “I think we should take a break with training.” Jean suggested.

            “Good idea, besides the Professor wanted us to see how well Rogue was fitting in.” Cyclops agreed.

            “She’s awake?” Paiton said. “Why didn’t you tell us? Let’s go.”

            Cyclops led the way towards the infirmary and saw Charles waiting for them.

            “You’re looking for Marie, she’s outside in Storm’s class at the moment.” He told them.

            “Oh, okay.” Cyclops shrugged. “What about Logan?”

            “He’s outside trying to decide if he should leave or not.”

            “Well let’s go see him then.” Jean replied smiling.

            “Only you want to see him.” Cyclops replied, making sure to put venom in his voice.

            “Give Logan a chance Scott.”

            “You give him a chance, I’ll stay here with Paiton and my brother.”

            “Actually I think we both wanted to meet Logan and get to know him.” Alex growled.

            “Suit yourself, but don’t blame me if he claws you to death.”
