"Where are we going?" Tina asked him, still gripping his wrist, her eyes stormy. "It's already four in the afternoon, none of us have eaten lunch, and we have nowhere to sleep for the night, unless we go back to your house. Even then, we have to find a way to get to Paris, and fast.""Wow," he said.
She frowned. "What?"
"It's impressive that you just hit me with all the most important questions on our agenda at once," He replied, gently peeling her fingers from his wrist.
"Well, they are important," she sighed distractedly, trying to ignore Queenie as she dusted book ashes off her sister's coat.
"She's right, Newt," Queenie said softly, turning to Newt and smoothing his hair in a motherly way. "Know of any places. . .?" she waited, and suddenly looked confused. "Hogwarts? I thought that you weren't able to Apparate there?"
"You aren't," Newt muttered. "But you can gain access if you're invited."
"You were invited?" Jacob guessed. "By that old teacher of yours. . .Bumbleshore? Right?"
Newt smiled a little. "Dumbledore, but close enough. Yes, he sent an owl while we were at the Ministry. I would've told you, but I was sort of preoccupied with. . .things. . ." The truth was, he was preoccupied with handling Leta and Theseus and watching Tina, making sure things didn't go too far. When it came to being reasonable and cooperative. . .well, Leta and his brother didn't exactly take the gold.
"So we're going to Hogwarts, then?" Jacob asked excitedly. "Isn't that your old school?"
Newt smiled despite their situation. "Yes, it is. One of the most prestigious wizarding schools in the wor-"
"Illvermorny is better," Queenie interrupted. Newt huffed indignantly and glared at her for a second, but he couldn't help smiling again. Tina pushed her sister's shoulder.
"Even though that's true, we should probably get to Hogwarts soon. Do you have a broom or anything?" She turned to Newt.
"I had one, but it was burned by the dragon, and I haven't had the chance to replace it. The nearest broom store is Quality Quidditch Supplies, which is in Diagon Alley, so. . ."
"So, no, then," Tina sighed, leaning wearily against the brick wall and wiping ashes from her forehead. "Any ideas, then?"
I knoq n. Everyone looked at him warily. "No! Really, it's safe. We can apparate into the village of Hogsmeade, and he can get us into Hogwarts. Dumbledore specifically stated that no students were to see us; he didn't want to raise their suspicion. News spreads fast in Hogwarts. . . anyway, her name is Martha Honeyduke, and- Oh, neveermind. you'll see when we get there."
One look from Tina, and Newt knew that she did. Queenie smiled at him reassuringly, and Jacob looked ready to follow them all to the ends of the earth.
"All right, then," Newt took Tina's hand again, and they Apparated to a cold, somewhat snowy street in Hogsmeade. It wasn't night yet, but some of the little shops were already closed for the day. Even the Three Broomsticks was winding down; there were only a handful of people inside. Newt led the way down the streets, pausing now and then to pull Jacob along from staring at the wizard shops.
"Jakie," Queenie said urgently. "There'll be plenty of time to come back here after we catch Grindelwald, okay? We need to keep going.""Sorry, it's just..." Jacob gestured vaguely at the post office, indicating the owls fluttering around its towers. Newt chuckled a bit.
"She's right, you know," he said. "We could go back to Diagon Alley, even; it's a lot nicer, most the time-"
