"Mo-om! Tell Liza to give me my phone back!" I rush down the stairs chasing behind my little sister. Elizabeth has always been the handful. "Sweetie, i'm sure she'll give it back, just wait until she gets tired of it. Don't give her any more attention" I hear mom say. Liza hides somewhere and I can't find her. I stand in defeat. Soon, I find myself walking towards the kitchen.
Mom is cooking something delicious from what I can tell. It smells heavenly. I sit down on a chair, waiting for a chance to get my phone back. "Come over here and get your breakfast Mayra, it'll get cold soon." Sure enough I was right, those crispy bacon strips don't lie. "Mom, I think I'll be going to the store after school." I catch sight of her face. She doesn't look too pleased. "Look, it won't take long, just in and out. Right here, in the convenient store, serious." It takes a while for her to answer, my mom isn't the easiest to convince.
"How much time do you think you're going to spend there?" Gosh, I knew it. I wasn't going to wriggle out of here so easily. "Well, I was thinking atleast 30 minutes? It's just a few supplies and stuff." I hear her sigh. "Fine. 30 minutes, no more." Wow, that was easy, she must be in a good mood today. "Thank you mom!" I pace towards the front door, picking up my backpack. "See you later mom!" I open the front door "Mayra, your phone!" Oh my goodness, she's right. I completely forgot! "Right! Sorry." Elizabeth, you better have dropped my phone by now! I run through the living roon and let a sigh of relief. I pick up my phone from the floor and rush out the door. "Bye mom, love ya!" Half of her response is cut off when the door shuts from behind me. I feel kind of guilty, but I can't afford to miss the public bus.
Today is so slow. I am barely getting through my classes without passing out from boredom. My phone is the key to staying entertained. Well, kind of. I have my friends too. Sadly, we are sitting too far from each other in any of our classes that the only time we can actually have a decent conversation is during lunch time. Luckily, there is 10 more minutes left until I'm out of this place. Vzzt, vzzt. Yami? Why is she texting me?
Girl I need you behind the gates once school ends, ASAP!
Why?
Just trust me! It's going to be really good I'm serious! I can't wait till you see it!
Ok fine, but you better not take long.
Yes, yes i'm serious.
Well, let's hope this doesn't interfere with my plans this afternoon. I can't afford to lose my chance to get the things I need to finish my project. Well, it's not a school project, but it's something to take my mind away from stress. Arts and Crafts are one of my favorite things to do after all.
I thought the time would never come, but sure enough, class is over. I pack my journals and head out towards the front of the school. Yami is standing anxiously behind the gates. Her legs are trembling from what I assume is excitement. For once I think twice about meeting her, Yami has always been the weird friend. "Okay, Yami, hurry up and tell me. I don't have all day I need to go to the store after th-" she cuts me off before I can continue. "Okay, okay, but look at what I just got!" She grabs her backpack and opens it slowly, revealing a small, fragile animal inside. "Ta-da! Isn't it cute? I got it yesterday. I don't know what i'll name it yet, but it's gotta be good. I was hoping you could help me." I'm frustrated now. For one, she could have just told me over the phone. And two, she shouldn't be bringing pets to school. She could have been caught!
"Yami, you know you're not supposed to be bringing pets here right?" I ask her. "Well, yeah, but I couldn't resist! I wasn't about to leave the poor little baby bunny alone by itself at home." She cradles the rabbit and pets it repeatedly. "Have you even fed it? How about your backpack? Don't you think it might have done it's business in it atleast once?" She places the rabbit carefully inside her backpack and zips it up partially, allowing air to seep through a slit. "Yes I did feed it actually, I have a little plastic bag with food and my water bottle too. And I placed some newspapers at the bottom of my backpack. I'm not as careless as you think Mayra" she replies with a grin. I sigh. "Okay, I'll send you a message with name suggestions. I need to go now. I'll see you around okay?" She smiles "Okay, bye!" Yami waves as I'm walking out of the gates.
It takes me a while to get to the store. Traffic is one of the main reasons why. My stomach is growling, so my first instinct is to go towards the food aisle. I grab some candy and chips. I know my mom won't be too happy that I ate something before lunch, but I really want something in my belly right about now. I spot two weird men further down the aisle. They are smelling the packages and eyeing them closely. It's almost like it's something new to them, but they are grown men, so I am curious. I continue to glance their way. They look super weird and I can't help but chuckle.
