I sat down by the fire pit with a Mike's Hard clenched in my hand. The fire danced in the air like a ballerina trying to do her best sugar plum fairy impression.
"I bet you're all wondering why I gathered you all here today," James said with a sarcastic tone in his voice.
Everyone looked at James in annoyance because it was his usual way of telling everyone what had happened that day. Most of us try to get together at least three times a week, and I happen to have a fire pit in my backyard. It was easy to have friends over because I could throw people in my backyard and give them some chairs and... wait for it... Mike's Hard Lemonade. Yeah, that's right. We go hard. My dad is a manager at their company so we get a lot of it, and he's rarely around enough to know who's been drinking all of it.
James had started explaining the daily news to everyone like a news reporter. We had no secrets. Our last secret was when we found out that Harry was gay, and that was five years ago.
"April liked Casper's post, Leia ate white girl food, and James' mother talked to him," Sam tried explaining to Harry as he sunk down in a lawn chair.
"What happened with that?" Harry asked, settling into his seat.
James looked over at me for some reason, then looked back at Harry, "She's upset that we're all moving in together in a week."
Everyone groaned at his response because we knew how parents could be, but we also knew how dumb we were being. High school seniors shouldn't try to move in together, but everyone had family issues.
I look down at my phone to see a sudden message I wasn't expecting.
aprilwild sent a message.
I widen my eyes, looking at the notification. Remembering where I was I let out a big "yeaheahhaaaaa!" and everyone suddenly looks up at me. I make eye contact with James again and smile.
"Casper, use your words," Leia said, water bottle in hand.
"I'm sorry it's just..." I pause and giggle. What the fuck?
Raising my phone quickly, I show everyone the notification on my lockscreen. They start to applaud, and I stand up and take my bow. While I'm standing there, the fire cracks as it starts to die.
"You, my friend, should respond to that as soon as we leave," Harry says, stretching out of his seat.
Everyone starts to stand up, as our fire is almost done. Everyone except James. Leia hugs me, and wishes me luck, even if I will see her in the morning. She starts to walk back inside to get the rest of her things. Sam gives me a high five and smacks my ass, "good luck, bro."
Sam chases after Leia inside, and Harry smiles at me. His braces show through his smile, and he walks away after a light hug.
I look over at James to see him staring at the burned out fire. While I'm sitting back down next to him, he starts to laugh.
"It's funny Cas," he says through his laugh, "you never know what could happen." His laugh stops and I could tell he was starting to worry.
"Jay, this is the first luck with girls I've ever gotten in 18 years of living."
"I know, I just wonder how it will turn out for you. I hate girls sometimes man." James complains to me while taking one last sip of his Lemonade.
"Drive safe tonight," I tell him while he starts to stand up.
"Tell me all about it tomorrow or I'm kicking your scrawny ass."
