In some species, when an animal loses its sight it is left to fend for itself, for others it's family take pity and kill it before it can suffer. Unfortunately for me, my species practice the first method. On my 5th birthday, when my family believed I could fend for myself, my father drove to the edge of the city claiming we were going for a walk then dumped me there. I have no idea how long it has been since then. I just focus on surviving every day.
"Well well well look what we have here. Look at those eyes, seems like someone's the runt and embarrassment of the family." Someone said. Their words didn't affect me, I'm used to it so i went back to searching for any scraps of food i could find in the bins i was raiding. "HEY!" One of them shouted making me jump slightly, "don't fucking ignore me bitch, the fact that anyone even notices you is a bloody miracle." I knew what was going to happen, they think I'm ignoring them, they get angry, I wake up in pain and probably bleeding. This time would be no different. As if on cue, loud footsteps thundered towards me and I began to freeze waiting for the first strike...
"Stop! Police, come out of the alley with your hands where we can see them!" A commanding voice echoed down the alley I'm apparently in. They weren't talking to me, they just stop the person then move on. I went back to my foraging until I heard quiet footsteps. It's true what they say about other senses being stronger when you lose one, or never had it in the first place. I didn't pay the person any mind until I heard the clicking of something metal on the hard ground. "I'm not gonna hurt you sweetie, can you come here?" They aren't talking to me, there must be another person in the alley. A whistle sounded behind me and something hit my shoulder. I turned so if I could see I would be looking at them, him. "Wow." I heard him say. A delicious sent distracted me from the guy somewhere in front of me. I followed the smell slightly but turned back to the bins, accidentally tipping one over. I moved onto the next one before I heard a groan from behind me. He's teasing me. A loud rumbling echoed from my abdomen followed by a low chuckles from behind. "You still hungry? You want some of this?" I turned around cautiously when a splat sounded from the floor. I crawled towards whatever made the sound, sniffing every tentative step I took. Meat, a small circular piece that also smelled sweet. "Thats honey roast ham, top of the line too." Quickly, I grabbed it and moved to behind the bins I was raiding before scoffing the lot. He might have more. I shuffled out from behind the bins and listened for any movement, felt for any vibrations in the air. Deciding the risks were worth the possible reward I moved towards where the guy could possibly be. Stopping when I could sense something a small distance in front of me, I sniffed again. "I'm not gonna hurt you." He said gently. Whatever I sensed in front of me I could feel moving closer slowly. "I'm...not...gonna...hurt...you." The thing moved ever closer until I felt something warm touch the side of my face. "That's it, see, you're alright." I felt his now identified hand move down my face then something loosely wrap around my neck. "You gonna come with us? We have more ham in the car, we can have someone look at your eyes and hopefully not get lost in them." I cocked my head at the last part but jumped slightly when I felt the thing around my neck get tugged. I whimpered, scared of where i was being dragged. "Shh, come on, we aren't gonna hurt you. And if anyone does you tell me, yeah?" the pulling continued and i hesitantly followed.I felt myself be lifted from the cool floor beneath me to an even colder metal table. My hands drifted to the edges and clasped on like vices so that I wouldnt fall off. "Whats the problem today sam?" Someone said to my left. "We got another blind one today jack. Young female, possibly late teens early twenties. Found her down one of the allies at the edge of town." I heard the guy that gave me the ham say. I began to sniff around while they continued talking until I felt someone touch me. "How'd you catch this one? She lookes in good condition all things considered." The new one said as his hands moved from my arm to my face and I felt him move my eyelids gently. "She was gettin harassed so we stoped the scum bag and brought her here, after tempting her out with some ham." I listened as the newbie moved to my other eye. "Her eyes are fully formed and theres no cateracts so it must be something to do with her optic nerve, retina or brain and if its either of the second to which I'm afraid it most likely is, she can't be cured." He said solemnly. "The best we can do for now is give her a wash and get her comfortable and fed until we have the tech to identify what is wrong."
"How long could that take?" Sam asked from a different place in the room. "Not sure but we don't have any free space so shes gonna have to go to a home where she can be cared for." Jack said sadly. "No," sam said through clenched teeth, "she can stay with me, I know what happens in some of those care homes, that is not happening to her." He snarled, frightening me enough that I whimpered. "First you need to stop scaring her and second you need to get the right stuff to look after her.""Done and done."
