The day of Kaye's funeral arrived, I dressed in a knee length black skirt and a white shirt, I paired them with my black Mary-Janes and my silver cross. I left my hair down, so it hung around my shoulders. Making my way to the church, I could see cars for miles. Stopping at the church gates, I watched as everyone walked in. Mr and Mrs Richards was at the main door thanking people who came. Two- thirty came and went, then it was over. Kaye's body was buried around family.
Walking home I thought of all the great times I had had with Kaye. The times her father and my aunt would chase us around town, beacuse we were so late after curfew. I laughed and couldn't stop. Once home I sat down at the kitchen table and a shiver ran through me, just like the day someone broke in. I searched the entire house but didn't find anything. After looking for fithteen minutes Ifinally gaveup and settled down for the night. I fell asleep instantly and was dreaming once again. The dreams began to blur together and I tried to focus on one thing in particular, the jet black eyes, I realised something had changed.
Parker was moving towards me, I couldn't move. I didn't want too. He reached for my hand and pulled me towards him, bending his head down he kissed me and mylips tingled. His hands roamed my body, but never touching the places I wanted them too. I could hear a distant buzzing, but I didn't want him to stop. The dream ended as sudden as it began and I was left gasping. The buzzing continued, realising it was my cell I scrambled to reach it. Looking at the screen I didn't recognise the nimber.
"Hello" I said cautiously
"Sky Summer's" A male voice asked
"Speaking" I replied
"It's detective Mills, we've spoke before" he said. I vaugley remembered him, he was an average looking man, who didn't say much.
"I remember, how can I help you?"
"I'm afraid I have some bad news"
My breath caught in my chest, I had a terrible feeling and didn't want to hear what the detective had to say. Shutting the phone, I sat up in bed and pulled my knees closley to my chest and rocked back and forth. I already knew what the detective was going to say, someone else I knew and cared about was dead. I dodn't know how or why and that scared me more than anything.
Waking early I was dresss and was out the house before I could change my mind. I decided to take a trip to Maine and do a little retail therapy, and forget about last night. The journey was a little longer than I planned, by the time I arrived I was starving. I searched around town and found a little place by the beach. It was quiet and a little dark and dingy. The waitress took my order and came back with my glass of water. My food finally came and looked deliouse and tasted even better.
i glanced around and noticed nearly everyone was huddled in booths, speaking in hushed tones. Apart from one man who was watching me. he had blonde hair and blue eyes, there was a scar across his left eye. He looked familiar to me, but icouldn't remember where i had seen him. Giving up I returned to my lunch.
After lunch I went to a few shops on the boardline, brought a couple of tops and a new pair of jeans. Walkng around Maine was calming and quiet. i sat on the beach and began to bake in the heat, I wished I had the sense to check the weather report before i had left this morning. The sun had begun to set and it was beautiful, it lit the sky in colours of rend and orange.
"It's beautiful isn't it" A voice said sitting down behind me. i didn't bother turning, I already knew who it was.
"Yeah it is. What are you doing here" I said leaning back into him
"Moi, I come for the restuarants. They do the best food in three states" he replied
"Seriously Parker, what are you doing here?" I said turning to face him
"I got a phone call from detective Jones this morning, he said that his partner called you last night"
"Yeah he did, but he didn't get to say much before I hung the phone up"
"That's what he said, he needs to speak to you Sky. It's really import--"
"Iknow what they're going to say" I said interputting him
"I don't think you do Sky"
"Actually yeah I do, I know someone I care about is dead. And judging by the fact that you are here, I'm taking you know this" I said
Pulling me closer into him, he kissed my kneck and his hands began to slid up my top, as suddenly as it all started, it stopped. Parker stiffened and pulled back, looking up at him he looked older and worried.
"What's wrong?" I asked looking around
"Sky there's something In really need to tell you" he said holding me tightly and pulling me to my feet
I stood there waiting for him to tell me this was all a mistake and he wasn't intrested anymore, but thankfully it never came. But what came next was something I couldn't believe.
"When we first met, you asked me why I came to Newport, well the truth is I came for you"
"Wh... what do you mean you came for me?"
"I knew your father before he was killed, he asked me to look after you if he was ever gone"
I couldn't speak, I couldn't believe what Parker was saying. He knew my dad. How did they know each other?
"I used to work with your father from time to time and we were good friends, he was the only person I trusted" he continued " Your father knew once you turned sixteen there was a possibility that you would inherit a gift. A gift that would put you in terrible danger"
Parker continued to talk, but I couldn't make sense of anything he was saying. he knew my dad, did that mean he knew my mother too. And what if he was responsible for there deaths.
"I first realised your father was right the night I picked you up from the beach, you mentioned every instict you had told you to run."
"And what does this have to do with you and my parents?"
"It has everything to do with me, your parents and something I'm sure you've been thinking too"
"What's that then?" My mind instantly thinking about Kaye .
"Kaye's death wasn't a random act, it was planned."
"What do you mean planned?"
"Whoever killed your parents is the same person who killed Kaye. Their plan was with your parents dead, you would turn to them for help. When you didn't they stepped up the game and killed Kaye, to leave you alone without help. And when that didn't work they killed Kyle"
"What!" I couldn't believe what Parker had just said, Kyle wasn't dead. Why would he be, he had nothing to do with me. I didn't like him and I certainly didn't trust him.
"They thought Kyle was the one you have been spending time with, they killed him to leave you alone"
Listening to Parker everything started to make sense. My parents death, Kaye's death, the blur of my dreams, but something kept nagging at me. Parker said whoever killed my parents planned for me to have no-one to turn to, but I did. My aunt Eliza took me in.
"It was my--"
Parker closed his hand over my mouth muffleing my realisation. He pulled me further into the shadows, as he did someone stood under the little light that was left. The guy from the resturaunt was standing there looking around for someone. I knew it was him, i recognised his ice blue eyes.
A shiver ran through and I fought the urge to run, the only thing keeping me still was Parkers iron-clad grip on my waist. The blue eyes stranger carried on walking, and Parker's grip on me loosened a little. I realised he was scared for me. I looked at him, I mean I actually looked at him. I looked into he's eyes and realised why he looked so familiar when I first saw him. They were the same eyes that has been haunting my dreams for over a year.
