Avery
When I was taking the math books out of my locker after the French class, Danna approached me. She looked more lively than usual, probably already forgot the plagiarism that kicked her our of the school's 'it girl' circle, the drama she had with her own friends back then, and the case that dragged her father's name down that could result in excessive loss of votes. She used to live from her father's popularity, but now, she was just Danna Jennings, the girl from my French, math, physics, chemistry, and PE class. My new friend.
Damn it, Rhett. Because of you, I really got used to that word.
"Hey, I got something for you." She took a bundle of papers from her bag. "Since you didn't sign up for Bensworth's early admission, I thought you might need this."
I stared the cover without taking it from her. It was application forms for a scholarship from Victoria Foundation that could be used for universities and colleges around the country. I turned my head away. "Pass."
"Avery, this is a great opportunity! I told Mrs. Dench about this, and she agreed that you should apply!"
"You what?" I slammed my locker and it startled her.
"Look, this was offered to me, but I didn't want it. You were the only one I could think about. I'm sure you'll get that scholarship—you can go anywhere you want!" She coaxed.
I left my locker to go to the math class while she followed. "Are you one of those people now? The people who want to kick me out of high school because they feel useless if I'm still here?"
"Really? Is that the reason you've been rejecting Mrs. Dench's scholarship offers—because you thought people wanted to get rid of you?" Danna laughed. "Gosh, you really are full of yourself. I thought I'm the only one."
"At least you realize one thing about yourself," I sneered.
"But, Avery, I'm serious about this. Ever since bad things kept happening to me, I stopped thinking about myself. If I'm still doing that, will I be here offering this to my greatest rival?"
I didn't know what was wrong with me lately. Everyone's words just got into my mind and influenced me so easily when I was a solid rock before. "Give me that."
"Yeaaaayy!" She handed me the forms happily. "Tomorrow is the last day for the first batch applicants. Sorry for the rush. I was gonna give this to you sooner, but I was considering Jake too. He rejected."
"And I can't reject this?"
"Come on, only three of us are actually qualified enough for this," she said. Jake probably refused to take it because he was still feeling guilty about the plagiarism case, which kinda made sense. "Please just make use of it. All you have to do is fill the forms and add other documents."
I looked at the forms once again. "Wasn't Victoria Foundation the one who managed your father's fundraiser?"
"Yeah, he was one of the board members, but because of the election, he postponed his activities there," replied Danna. Wow, they really gave this exclusively to her. You really couldn't deny the power of higher-ups. "Their building is right across his campaign office. You just need to drop the forms and documents there. Wear something nice, there might be a short interview."
No doubt, without even filling the forms, they would definitely accept Danna Jennings. She probably had already been given snippets of the selection progress.
"Anyway, speaking about campaign... My dad is planning to hold a memorial for Michael Norris."
In the class, I took the seat near the window and she took the one next to me. "Why are you telling me that?"
