Chapter 1| The Box

I heard the clanking of metal, and I could feel that i was drenched in water. I sat up and immeaditly gagged up tons of water. It's like I drowned but was saved. 'Am I dead?'. I pinched my arm."Ouch!" I squealed.

Then I realised, this wasn't a dream. I looked around to see some barrels, supplies, and it was all held in a metal box. Along with all of these things was me! I began to look for an exit, I started punching the sides of the box, stomping on the bottom. Finally I punched the top, this started to move the box upward.

It began to rise, I was terrified and was worried if I was kidnapped or maybe I was being sent to be killed!! This box kept moving up a dark tunnel. All I could see were various red lights. It started to become to much as I began shouting. "Hello? Hello? Hey! Hey! Help me!".

I then heard a loud noise and realised the box had stopped when it flung me back into the corner. A bright light shone through the metal cage I was trapped in. I raised my hands to block the sun. "Its another girl, Go get her" One guy said."Day one, Greenie. Rise and shine" one boy said.

I heard voices talking "She looks like a slopper to me". "I could use some help in the kitchen" I ran straight forwards not looking back. "Hey, we got a runner!" I tripped over my own two feet and fell flat on my face. "Oh!" "Take it all in" voices said. They grabbed me and threw me into a cage with bamboo bars.

"She's all yours!" A man said walking away. "Hey-" a man said, I jumped back. "Hey there Green Bean, you're not gonna run again, okay? Good" he said. "My name is Alby, can you tell me anything about yourself?" He asked. I shook my head not being able to remember anything.

"Who you are? Where you came from? Nothing at all" he asked. "No!" I said. "Can you tell me your name?" He asked. "I, uh, I can, why can't I remember anything!" I screamed. "It's okay, hey, hey relax, it's okay it happens to us all". "You'll get your name back in a day or two, it's the one thing they let us keep" he said.

"What is this place?" I said. "Let me show you" he said. He gave me his hand and helped me out. "We eat here, we sleep here, we grow our own food, build our own shelters, whatever we need the Box provides, the rest is up to us!" he said. "The Box?" I asked.

"Yeah. It's sent up with fresh supplies and a new Greenie, this month that's you, Congratulations" he said patting my back. "Sent up? By who? Who put us here?" I asked.  "That we don't know" he said. "Hey, You alright Alby?" A blonde haired boy said. "A-ha Green Bean meet Newt! When I'm not around he's in charge" he said hitting his shoulder.

"Well it's a good thing you're always around then! That was some dash you made earlier, for a minute I thought you had the chops to be a runner-- til you face planted" he said. "Wait, a runner?" I asked blushing.  "Newt,  do me a favor go find Chuck" Alby said. "Alright!" He said. "Thanks. Look, I'm sorry to rush this,You came up a little late, and there's a lot to do, We got something special planned tonight" He said.

He patted me on the back and led me to a tree fort type Building. "I hope you're not afraid of heights. Let's go. Come on" he said climbing a ladder. I looked around at the field, it was beautiful the green grass, everyone working together, laughing. "This is all we got. We've worked hard for it, If you respect this place... you and I will get along just fine" he said. "What's out there?" I asked pointing to a large opening.

" We only have three rules. First, do your part, No time for any freeloaders, Second,never harm another Glader, None of this works unless we have trust, Most importantly... never go beyond those walls. Do you understand me, Greenie?" He said. "Hey Alby!" A little boy with curly brown hair shouted. "Hey Chuck, where you been man" he said.

~Time Skip~

"It's basically the same story for all of us. We wake up in the Box, Alby gives us the tour... then here we are. Don't worry, You're already doing better than I did, I clunked my pants three times before they got me out of the pit" he said the rest i heard faintly as I walked away. "No, come on Greenie where are you going" he said. "I just wanna look" I said. "You can look around all you want but you better not go out there" he yelled. "Why Not? What's out there?" I asked.

"I don't know! I just know what I'm told! And we're not supposed to leave! " He said. Three boys ran past us one boy with black hair leading the other with blonde hair, and the third with brown hair. "Hey Chuck, new Greenie huh, how does it feel to be promoted?" the blonde haired boy asked. "Feels great, Ben!" He said. "I thought no one was allowed to leave?!" I said.

"I said we're not allowed to leave, they're different, they're runners, they know more about the maze than anyone" he said. "Wait what?!" I said. "What?" He said. "What? You just said maze" I said. " I did, yeah, where are you going? What're you doing?" He screamed.

"I'm just gonna look" I said. "I told you, you can't" he said tugging my shirt. "No one leaves especially not now!". "Okay, all right I'm not gonna go" I said. As I took one step forward I felt a heavy force lunge at me.

"We gotta stop meeting like this Greenie!" He said.
