*ONE MONTH LATER*

JOHN enters shop with bag. He sits in the same seat as before. SARAH walks over to take his order.

SARAH: Hello John, will you have the usual?

JOHN (waving distractedly): Yes.

SARAH leaves to prepare JOHN's coffee. JESSICA walks from back room to counter to speak to SARAH.

JESSICA: Is it just me, or is John more distracted than usual today?

SARAH: I think it's just you. Unless he finally noticed how beautiful I am and how much he wants to be with me?

JESSICA snorts in disbelief. SARAH finishes pouring JOHN's coffee and brings the mug over to his table.

SARAH: Here you are. Will that be all for today?

JOHN nods. He sips coffee, misses his mouth, and spills it all down his white shirt.

JOHN: Crap!

SARAH: Oh no! I'll go get you some napkins.

SARAH grabs more napkins from dispenser at counter. She returns to JOHN's table and begins helping him clean up the mess.

JOHN (suddenly): Will you go out with me?

SARAH (looking up): What?

JOHN: I asked you if you would go out with me.

SARAH (trying to clear ear with pinky): Sorry, I think I heard you wrong. For a second I thought you asked me to go out with you.

JOHN: That may be because I did ask you to go out with me.

SARAH gapes at JOHN.

JOHN (clearing throat nervously): It's fine if you don't want to. It's just that my older brother is hosting this formal dinner, and the company's going to be there, and... well, it's complicated. The point is, I need a date. The dinner's tomorrow and I cannot be seen there alone.

SARAH pauses cleaning the floor, but says nothing.

JOHN (clearing throat again): Well-- well, I suppose I'll find someone else. You're not the only woman in this city, I'm sure I can manage to--

Something clicks for SARAH.

SARAH (interrupting JOHN): Wait, wait. Let me see if I've got this straight. You want me (points at her nose) to go with you (points at JOHN) to a dinner party?

JOHN: Yes.

SARAH: Like, as a date sort of situation?

JOHN (blushing lightly, rubbing back of neck): Um... well, yeah.

SARAH (jumping up and dancing around): YES!!!!!

JOHN (looking at her in fright): What?

SARAH (blushing, remembering where she is): Oh, uh, I mean...

SARAH: I'd love to go with you.

JOHN (smiling with relief): Wonderful. I'll pick you up outside this shop at 5:30 tomorrow night?

SARAH (still blushing embarrassedly): Yeah, that'd be great.

JOHN: Alright, I'll see you then.

SARAH (smiling dreamily): See you.

SARAH walks back behind the counter.

JESSICA: What was that all about?

SARAH: I think Mr. Tall Dark and Handsome just asked me out...

JESSICA: WHAT?!

SARAH: He said somebody or other is having a dinner or something... Anyway, he needs a date, so he asked me to go with him.

JESSICA: Wow.

SARAH: I know.

JESSICA: No, I mean "wow" as in, this is like hearing one of those stories people tell about dying and coming back to life. Never thought it could happen until it did.

SARAH slaps JESSICA's arm.

JESSICA: Ow!

SARAH: You deserved that one.

JESSICA: I know.

SARAH: Anyway, he's going to pick me up outside this shop at 5:30 tomorrow to take me to this party.

JESSICA: There's one problem with that.

SARAH: What?

JESSICA: You don't have anything to wear to a formal dinner.

SARAH slaps forehead in horror.
