The constant beeping is driving me insane. The whistling will surely make me deaf. Similar to a kettle, but a tenfold louder. Growling out, I kick a bucket near me across the room. I swear if I don't make it to the underworld with my new creation, this stress will. I secure the final bolt. It's like music to my ears! Silence. I lean back in my chair, too late to realize that there was no back. In a sudden moment of panic, I flapped my arms around like a bird in hopes of grabbing something.
Hiss! A flaming, burning feeling spreads from my hand to my elbow. I had grabbed onto the heat radiator, only causing more damage. My body crashed into the dusty, dirt ground. I fell off of a chair. What a clumsy buffoon I am.
"Still working on that thing?"
"Yes, and he has a name! It's Ambrosio, meaning eternal and indestructible." I stand back up, fixing the chair and the water bucket, which is now empty.
Alex, that ignorant fool does not believe in my abilities. Ambrosio is no thing. He is my heart and soul. He is the anchor that is keeping me on this putrid earth. The one object keeping me away from my beloved, but we will soon be reunited.
"Only a god could be immortal! Who do you think you are, trying to reach such an impossible feat?" Alex, with his snarky voice is filled with doubt, but one day he will see. They will all see when I bring my wife back from the depths of hell.
I chuckle and grab a wet rag from the ground. It is soaked with water, and I hold it tight. I feel so stupid, knocking over my water bucket seconds before I burn myself. If one had not known better, they would think that the gods were against me.
"Alex, when will you learn? The goals of mere mortals are futile." I trail off, lost in thought. The sun beating down harshly, forcing me to look at the ground.
"Some mortals have families to feed. You're just lucky that these oafs pity you." With that, he turns his back and saunters away, as if he had won! What does he know? He has never spoken to the god of death. He has never walked to the end of the underworld and back. He has never tried to tempt Pluto with music. They wouldn't believe me anyhow.
"Hello Orpheus. What are you doing?" Calista bats her eyes at me. What does that temptress want? She knows I'm busy.
"I'm creating a device to save my beloved wife." I practically growled at her. She asks the same question everyday, when will she move on? I may have the power of godly music, but there are many other richer suitors she can choose from. She knows that I have a wife, and she knows that I devote my life to her.
"Oh, what a shame." She purrs, standing awfully close. "I'm sure she wouldn't mind. I mean, she is never coming back anyways." She leaned against Ambrosio. She tried to make doe eyes, but she was really pushing me.
"Go swim in the Greek Rivers of Fire. Sirens are supposed to sound beautiful along with being hideous. Not just the lather." I smirk at my response.
"How dare you, you old swine!" She swings around and struts away as if she were better than me. Absolutely disgusting. The people in this village have no shame, no honor! They do however have a mighty fine blacksmith.
Speaking of rivers, I really do need a break. And a bath. I smell like a rotting carcass. I suppose I am. I suppose we all are, our beauty deteriorating from the moment that we're born.
I hum a melody that was running through my mind as I walk to the nearest stream. I was so lost in the soft, enchanting melody that I had not noticed the growing band of woodland creatures following me. They were small and fuzzy, as well as large and feathered. Even the trees seemed to be swaying along in harmony. A small smile spread on my face. At least some creatures appreciate me.
Freshly bloomed flowers hedged this end of the stream, which had a small waterfall just above the average man's head. The water was clearer than the most refined glass, and the sand was as white as pearl. The perfect resort, and it was all mine. I slip into the cool water. I felt my joints pop and my bones crack. This is exactly what I need. Before I know it, I start to slip into sleep.
With my song
I will charm Demeter's daughter,
I will charm the Lord of the Dead,
Moving their hearts with my melody.
I will bear her away from Hades.
O Gods who rule the dark and silent world,
To you all born of a woman needs must come.
All lovely things at last go down to you.
You are the debtor who is always paid.
A little while we tarry up on earth.
Then we are yours forever and forever.
But I seek one who came to you too soon.
The bud was plucked before the flower bloomed.
I tried to bear my loss. I could not bear it.
Love was too strong a god, O King, you know
If that old tale men tell is true, how once
The flowers saw the rape of Proserpine,
Then weave again for sweet Eurydice
Life's pattern that was taken from the loom
Too quick. See, I ask a little thing,
Only that you will lend, not give, her to me.
She shall be yours when her years' span is full.
No one under the spell of his voice could refuse him anything. He
Drew iron tears down Pluto's cheek,
and made Hell grant what Love did seek.
The song that haunts my every sleeping, and waking moment. The song that even the god of the underworld, Pluto could not resist. The song that reminds me how much of a failure I am, and how I lost my wife due to a stupid mistake.
It's somewhat ironic. I have so much power that most cannot even comprehend, and yet I am unable to keep my gaze forwards for only another minute.
