Two young girls played in a field of almost glowing white and blue flowers, teasing each other gently underneath an afternoon sun. Flower crowns adorned each head, blonde and brunette locks respectively, as they rolled about in the grass and laughed as if their roles didn't matter. As if the world could slow down and stop for the two of them. Ever since it was discovered that she was born with the Hylian Crest on her back, Khys' fate was sealed. From the moment of her very birth, the delicate swirls and shapes that were highlighted in the royal sky-blue on her back signified her relationship with the Royal Family, and her importance to the story of old. It was her destiny to serve the Royal Family, and her father saw to it that his little girl was well prepared for anything. Raised with the princess, she grew up to be her personal retainer, starting officially when she was thirteen, and Zelda was twelve.
"Kiki, I heard some of the younger soldiers talk about something I wanted to try," the blonde haired female said as her brunette companion lovingly braided her hair.
"Oh, scoping out the boys, I see?" Khys' tone was teasing, and even though she knew that the princess had not yet (if she would ever at all) developed an interest in courtship. She still couldn't pass up the opportunity to bug her about it, though.
"W-what?! No, I was j-just walking past the guard house when I-I-!"
"Relax, milady," the brunette reassured, fondly patting her head as she tied off the braid with a ribbon. "Now, what were you saying?"
Zelda pouted, clearly upset at getting flustered about Khys' joke. She wasn't able to stay mad at her friend for very long, and she sighed, shaking her head. "W-well, it sounds a little stupid. Not to mention dangerous." Khys rose an eyebrow, tying off some of the blonde's bangs in a similar fashion, but didn't stop her. Taking the silence as her key to continue, Zelda cleared her throat, her young face determined in her words. "But I'd like to try it... at least once! Just to say I've done it. It's rare that my father lets us out of the castle on our own, so I thought it might be kind of fun to try something a little... risky."
"If you break something, it's my head that goes rolling," Khys warned her, the wisdom and morbid sense of humor in her words were much suited for someone older than a person of her age. Due to her unique circumstances, Khys was raised to be more mature than her peers.
"Don't talk like that!" Zelda was always quick to correct her words, a pouty expression upon her face as her cheeks puffed out slightly, defined blonde eyebrows furrowed in disapproval. "I'd never let father execute you, and you know it, Khys." With a firm nod, the young princess looked at her retainer with a look of determination. "I want to go shield surfing!"
"You want to do what...?"
"You know what I said, don't make me repeat myself!" Zelda was becomming more flustered by the minute, and Khys finally laughed, unable to retain her stoicism around such a pouty and yet still excitable princess. "Khys, you must stop teasing me!"
"But you're so adorable when you're flustered, milady," the brunette couldn't help but murmur, standing up and admiring her handiwork once Zelda's hair was done. "Now, how does one... shield surf?"
"I think I have the idea... let's go find a few pot lids and I can show you what I mean..." the blonde haired princess spoke eagerly, standing herself and taking Khys's hand in her own, dragging her toward a small hill.
