"Faster than you thought it would?"
His answering scoff rankled against my nerves. Faster than he thought? I couldn't believe I was hearing this. How was this relationship, if that's even what we were, going to work?
"Look, Stormy, this was going to happen, regardless. It's just happening now rather than later." His shoulders raised and lowered in a quick shrug. How could he be so comfortable with ending a strong, committed relationship?
I stood from my seat on the stands and turned towards his partially turned frame and uttered one word. "No." And I ran.
His steps were heavy against the carpet as I flew down the stairs and towards the front door. I risked a look back and was surprised to see he was closer than I originally thought. My gaze caught the bright lights above the front door and I pushed my legs faster, willing myself to make it.
An odd mix of a groan and moan came out of my throat when he tackled me into the front door. He used his body to trap me against it, forcing me to turn towards him. My hands were shaking, still ticking high on the adrenaline. It was euphoric, I hadn't felt that way in a long time. When I finally had the courage to look up, I cringed and cowered back into the locked door. The look is his eye was rage, pure and simple.
"Don –"
I was up and in his arms before I could stop him. He threw me over his shoulder and opened the door, clicking off the remaining lights, and heading towards his car. My butt was in the seat and I was buckled in. Before I knew it, we were speeding down the empty roads, barely paying attention to the stop signs.
"Where are we going?"
Donnie didn't answer. I repeated the question six times before crossing my arms and pouting in the passenger seat like a four year old. The car drove steadily on the road for a few miles before veering right and entering a gated community. He barely glanced at the guard, but was still allowed in.
At the far end of the community, in a cul-de-sac sat a two-story white house, pushed back away from the road. It was surrounded with bright white garden lights and modern. The garage smoothly opened and Donnie drove inside, and killed the engine. Silence filled the car.
I zoned out, trying to remember how to escape this situation in the first place. When he opened my door I started, staring up at him in question and reached out, taking his warm hand. It's always been hard to impress me, but his home was both modern and warm. Decorated in cool tones: blues, beiges and whites, the house was sophisticated and well taken care of.
I stepped away from him when we walked into his den and he finally released me. The room was open with tall ceilings and a wet bar, the floor to ceiling windows opened to a private backyard and a lap pool. It was quiet here... serene.
"Why did you bring me here?" It was a soft whisper on the wind. The drink he pressed into my hand was quickly shot back and I turned to look at him. He stalked around the room before leaning back onto his couch and staring up at me.
"I wanted to." The answer was simple. At least, for him.
"What does that mean, Donnie?"
Donnie didn't answer, but instead stood from his perch on the couch. I watched him approach, swallowing against the sudden attraction I felt for him. It was like we were magnets, I couldn't resist him and I was beginning to get tired of trying.
"Le, I want you here. Is there always supposed to be some complicated reason?" He followed me when I stood and backed towards the windows. "You're not going to run again."
I shook my head, and lowered my eyelids. His breath was hot against my face when I looked back up at him. My body surrendered when he leaned down and sealed his lips against mine.
