I stared at Eddie, sitting on the table in front of me with the gun pointed towards me. He was quiet, staring into my eyes like a lovestruck fool. What had happened to him? My phone trilled and lit to light, Eddie mother's name, Jo-Mae Gathers, slid across the screen. It felt odd to see her name there; I hadn't spoken to her in so long.
When I moved to grab it, he latched onto my knee and roughly pushed me back down with his other hand. I didn't fight him. He sat there another few minutes, not speaking, not moving with a look of love on his face.
"What are you going to do, Eddie?" I asked, my voice low and calming.
"What do you mean, butterfly?"
"What are you going to do?" I shifted, crossing my legs. "You said I left you no choice. What did you mean by that?"
"Oh!" He slapped his knee, and got up. "Well, you seem to think I'm kidding about leaving Donnie alone. So, you and I are going to wait for your boyfriend and we're all going to have a little chat."
I couldn't afford the possibility that Donnie would walk into a situation like this.
"Why don't we talk now?" A nervous chuckle in my throat. "What could you have to say to him that can't be said to just me?"
He stopped and turned towards me. The gun was at his side now, lightly clutched in his hands. For the first time since he pulled it, his finger was off the trigger. I gulped and struggled to pull my eyes away from it to meet his. Eddie was almost studying me, his look trapped between determined and unfathomable.
When he spoke, his voice sounded dead. "You're afraid of me."
I wanted to shout; of course I'm afraid of you! But I figured in this particular situation, that taking care of me was best. Well, along with keeping him cool, calm and collected until I could convince him to put down the gun and leave.
"You're talking crazy, Eddie. And you're holding me hostage with a gun." I took a deep breath and steadied my gaze. "Why wouldn't I be afraid?"
"No!" He stepped towards me. "You can't be afraid of me. We're best friends and we'll soon be husband and wife. We belong together, Le. You know this. I know this. Everyone knows this."
"What the hell are you doing, Eddie?"
I started when I heard Nichole's voice coming from my front door. She stood just inside, her hands on her hips. She looked odd though; her normally styled hair was wild and frizzy, and her clothes were too big and pulled awkwardly against her small frame. Eddie turned towards her and I misunderstood his intent. I jumped between them, with my hands raised, facing Eddie.
"Get out, Nichole!" I yelled towards her, "he has a gun!"
When she didn't move, I clicked my teeth and swung in her direction – stopping cold.
Her voice was eerily calm when she finally spoke. "I know he has a gun, Le."
"What are you doing, Nichee?"
"Stop calling me, Nichee! I hate that nickname, I always have." I took a shaky breath and nodded my head.
"I'm sorry, Nichole." I tried again. "What are you doing?"
"You didn't tell her?" Nichole was staring at Eddie now, leaning over slightly to look at his face.
"Tell me what?" I muttered. She ignored me.
"Why is she still alive, Edward?"
I stared at my friend. Trying to figure out what the hell was going on. Nichole walked into my kitchen and grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge, she raised it to her lips and downed the bottle and tossed it on the counter. Her footsteps were shuffled and dragged, almost as if she were drugged, as she made her way back over to where we stood.
"Sit down."
I obeyed Eddie's words and sat on the couch, directly diagonal between the two of them. Neither of them spoke for a while, Eddie didn't answer Nichole's question, and she didn't ask him again.
"Okay. Since you won't tell me what you're doing. At least tell me how long you've been waiting." I glanced between Nichole and Eddie, waiting for him to answer.
"About two hours."
She looked at me, "how long before Donnie gets here?"
"What makes you think he's going to come back here?" She smirked. "Because he's in love with you."
