I threw the covers back as my alarm sprung to life. Saturday, at last. I hadn't returned to school or spoken to anyone for the remainder of the week. The only person I had interacted with was Juke, one of my penpals from France. He was teaching me to speak French and wasn't one to ask questions about my personal life. For that, I was thankful.
"Morning Kai," Kelly greeted me as I slumped at the table before she handed me a plate of pancakes. I mumbled some what of a good morning in return, but it was lost due to half a pancake I was attempting to devour. Man, she was a good cook. As I started on my second one, Kelly sat down opposite me, sipping her coffee. She put the mug down and picked up something from the seat beside her and placed it in front of me. I leaned over to try and read the upside down writing when I saw two things that would disgruntle any teenager: 'Homework' and 'Kye Alkides', "They spelt my name wrong," I muttered under my breath.
"This is all the work you missed over the last week, I asked for them to send it over, you know, incase you wanted to catch up," Kelly explained gently. I was still unstable in everyone's eyes.
Morons.
"Yeah, I'll get it done," I grunted. Kellu seemed to visably relax as if she has expected me to fight her on it.
After breakfast, I dragged myself upstairs, this time I went into my design room. The lime green walls were caked with pictures, designs, sketches, material swatches and more. My heaven. I ditched all the papers onto a tiny stool and ran my hands over the fabric draws that lined one of the walls. My fingers stopped over a leaf patterned silk. I pulled it oit and rubbed it between my finger tips before laying it down on my work bench. My eyes glinted as all my ideas began to flow.

"Hot chocolate break?" Kelly asked, standing in the doorway, a steaming mug of chocolatey goodness. I switched my sewing machine off and removed the material, examining it closely. Kelly gasped in the doorway. I turned around and she seemed genuinely suprised. "Did you make that?" Kelly stuttered, still recovering from her shock. I nodded, conveing my confusion over her drastic reaction, as I got up and left the room. Kelly followed me into my wardrobe. I yanked open the door to all my own creations and hooked the skirt up next to my studded jacket and my favourite blue cut-off hoodie. "I can see how you got into this school," she said, after what felt like an eternity of silence. "I got in because my Dad paid for me to go!" I snapped. Kelly blushed and nodded."Um, have you started the school work yet?" She asked, trying - mainly failing - to compose herself and hide her embarrassment. I shook my head, "I'll start now," I sighed, this is why they all think I'm unstable. "Here, whilst it's still hot," Kelly said quietly, handing me the hot chocolate before turning on her heel and leaving the room.
I intimidated her...I sat at my desk and fired up my computer before realising the papers were in the other room. I headed to the design room just as the doorbell rang. I turned and peered around the corner as Kelly opened the door. A police officer stepped into the porch. "I need to speak with her," his voice shook. Kelly nodded solemly, "Kai?" She called up the stairs just as I edged out of view. I waited a few second before emering around the corner. "Hmm?" I replied before narrowing my eyes ath the police officer. "Morning Miss Alcides," he started, back to the formalities," I am Police Constable Jones, will you please come with me?" Jones asked, quietly. I sighed but strode down the stairs, towards hime, making him visibly gulp. Another one intimidated by a sixteen year old.

"Why are we at the hospital?" I asked as Jones pulled into the reserved section of the state hospital. Jones glanced nervously at me, "please, just be patient miss," he stuttered, trying to maintain some authority in his voice. I rolled my eyes and got out the car and started towards the entrance. Jones jumped out and rushed to catch up with me. It was probably a mental health check up and I intended to get it over and done with as quick as possible.
I waited for Jones to finish talking to the chirpy receptionist before he signalled for me to follow him. As we waited for the elevator doors to open, I stared at him, "you're new to this, aren't you?" I quizzed. Again, the nervous wreck of an officer gulped, " yes miss, is it that obvious?" he asked in return, blush slowly flushing his entire face. I nodded as the doors opened. Jones seemed to slump in defeat. I wanted to laugh but the poor guy was trying his best. Jones pushed the button for the fourth floor and the elevator doors slid shut once more.
I drummed my fingers on the arm rest, with each passing moment, I was growing increasingly restless. "Miss Alcides?" A doctor asked. I stood up and she signalled for me to follow her. We walked down a few corridors until he stopped outside a room, opening the door for me.
My heart stopped as I saw the bed in the middle of the room.
The tears ran down my face, completely unannounced just before I passed out and the doctor called for help.
After all, my bestfriend was supposed to be dead!
I woke to the voices of doctors bickering over some sort of output. I blinked at that horrible white light hovering over me. "She's awake," a small voice said. A voice I recognised. "Hey sweetie," it cooed, but still I struggled to identify it. A cool hand patted my forehead and cheeks. I smiled in appreciation. "Ma'am, please could you leave the room whilst we check her over?" A doctor asked. Whoever was sat next to me tensed, "no, I will not, my little chick has been through enough and I will not leave her side," the voice snapped. Little chick...
"Grandma?" I croaked. The doctor grumbled something inaudible and the woman stood up beside me. "Hey Chick," Grandma cooed, a smile forming on her frail lips. A tear ran down my face but she wiped it away with her hand, "don't cry, I'm here now, don't cry," she whispered, her eyes softening. The doctor cleared his throat and began examining me.
"Can I see him again?" I asked Jones when he came back in, with two cups of tea. He handed one to my Grandma who smiled gratefully, "if you want to," he replied, his voice much calmer than before. I nodded, "take it easy though hunny, I don't want you collapsing and hurting yourself," Grandma gently scolded, blowing gently on her tea.I groaned and turned over, my stomach churned and I threw up, inches away from a now colourless Jones. Grandma placed a sick bowl under my mouth, holding my hair out of my face. My pancakes seemed to rise back up my throat as I emptied my stomach. "It's not uncommon for vomitting and nausea after fainting," The doctor murmed to my Grandma as he scribbled furiously in to his book. My throat heaved but my stomach was empty. My eyes felt heavier and heavier when I realised the doctor was injecting me with something and I drifted away.
I woke with a start, no one else was in the room and the lights were out. I clambered out of bed and opened the door to a corridor lightly illuminated. I blinked before stepping out of my tiny room. I shivered, becoming aware or the tiny slip-on gown I was wearing. Luckily one without a gap at the back. I squinted through the lights as they got harsher, trying to find Halo. I walked down several corridors until they started to become more recognisable. I grabbed the cold, metal door handle and silently opened it. On the bed, Halo was hooked up to numerous monitors and drips. I sat at the chair beside his bed and held his hand, hoping to stir him. "At the moment he is unresponsive, but you are more than welcome to just sit and talk to him," A nurse explained, making me jump. I looked at her in confusion, "what do you mean unresponsive?" The nurse came further into the room and busied herself with checking the machines. "Well, he's in quite a bad state, he's very lucky to be alive but right now he's unconcious, like in a coma so to speak," The nurse replied, choosing each word carefully. I stared at Halo, tears brimming in my eyes. The nurse gave me one last sympathetic look before leaving and closing the door quietly. A cold shiver ran through me, alone in the dark yet again. I clambered in the bed beside Halo. If he was unconcious he wasn't really going to mind. I rested my head on his chest, listening to his heart. "Please wake up, I can't be alone, just please, come back to me," I whispered to the room, tears falling onto his gown. My eyes grew heavy once more and I left the world of the awake.
