I was walking home from school when the old hag Alonzo called me.
"Hello sir, master Conductor"
"When are you going to start going by my real name?"
"Whenever you decide to stop doing the Matching"
"You know it's not in my power"
"Whatever, now what did you want to tell me?"
"Get here, stat, I have tons of paperwork for you to do"
"I swear if you didn't pay 12 dollars an hour I would've quit this job!"
"That's great, now get your ass here"
Great I just had to handle a whole day of school with all those annoying douches and I have to come to the Matching office. Not to mention all the homework I have to get done. As I was passing by the cornerstone building I saw the biggest one of them all, Nico. Not to mention that I had a burning crush on him that I had to hold back on.
"Hey Gnoma"
"I told you not to call me that"
"Why is the garden being too rough on you these days?"
"Oh just stop"
"Where are you heading off to?"
"Matching office" I grumbled
"Oh, the bloodsucking program?" He expressed surprise. "You mean the office where they find all the humans to partner with the vampires?"
"Presto"
"So I'm guessing they give you first dibs on your human, eh? Damn, do you think you could get me a cute one?" He stepped a little closer to me. "You know I like them big"
"Ugh, you're disgusting!" I stepped back, a little flustered, my cheeks heating up.
Great, now I have another thing for Alonzo to tease me about. We eventually parted ways when I reached the building. The building was pretty short, only 3 stories high, mostly because there was not a lot of need for more than 10 people to work in the matching department.
"What complications happened today," I said slipping my backpack into the wheely black chair
"Don't put it there, that's my seat!"
"I thought you liked the flowery love seat that Valerie gave you?" I said coyly. He started blushing which is kind of cute for a 60-year-old man.
I smirked like a victor over Athens. Valerie was his matched wife of 40 years, and they still acted like a newly-wedded couple on their honeymoon. She also happened to be the only soft-spot in his entire disposition.
"Don't get me started! Now, this vampire has a track record of assault and Vico wanted us to find a human that will be able to put up with that"
"Ugh, not one of these again" I grumbled. How the heck am I supposed to find a human who can't resist being taken by their village while also being strong enough against a thirsty vampire.
Oh yeah. I may have left that part out. I'm a vampire. So is Alonzo. And everyone else in the town I live in.
I looked through the files and found a man who had been in the army, had several criminal records and was currently in the underground wrestling. Bingo, I smirked to myself.
I was stuck in the office until 7, which was not too bad for most weekdays. I actually wished I worked later, so I didn't have to run into my dysfunctional family.
"Hey Lou, is Dad still on the booze, or should I kill some time first?"
"He only had a glass of scotch, so I think you should be good to go. Also, I left some brownies I cooked the other day on the 1st drawer to the right of the oven. I had to hide it from Nico that sneaky little bastard."
"Thanks, Lou! I swear Nico can't even walk a full metre yet! What the heck"
Lou was one of the sweetest and only sane people in my house. She also happened to be our family Blood Parent. It honestly sounds better than it seems, more or less to make them feel like they weren't living blood sacks. She usually came daily at different times of the day to give us each a feeding. Mine was in the morning and my parents had some at work, so she left early today.
I finally reached home after half an hour to the sound of my parents arguing. Not again, it's probably about how my dad should work longer hours, or whether they should invest in a house or not. I just started walking upstairs when they finally noticed me.
She turned around, her slender, perfectly proportioned body came out of the shadows."Oh, Anoma, you're home. How was school?" My mom inquired, although I knew she didn't really care. What she did care about was whether my marks were high enough, or if I was getting my volunteer hours up so I could get a good Blood Mate.
Oh yeah. The Blood Matching Event.
It was only in a week and I still hadn't even gone to the mall or even thought of my outfit. It was just school, school, school, and work. It wasn't even like the girls at school were squealing about getting a cute Blood Mate, or whether he had a tattoo or not. Aishhhh.
"So, Alena was telling me how her daughter got matched with a delightfully delicious man. Even though she was almost as plain as you, she just got her volunteer hours to a 200!"
Ughhh, not this again. Most of the talk around here was about how I was ever going to get a match with how I looked. I wasn't too bad, I mean I was a little short, and still had not completely lost my baby fat. However, compared to the rest of the vampires around me, I seemed to have gotten the humanoid genes rather than the traditional slender, tall, pale figure often associated with vampires.
"Mom, we've had this talk before. I don't need a perfectly good-looking human being. I just need someone who will treat me right and doesn't overly poke in my business."
"Oh don't be such a bore. Trust me, once you find a match you'll be a lot more avid in these kinds of things"
"Please, that would be the biggest tragedy of my life" I exclaimed while feigning a horrified face. I honestly didn't even have to fake it I was actually scared out of my wits. Besides, the only person I ever had feelings for is Nico, and even he is the biggest douche I have met in my life. Playing with girls hearts, doing some underground drug dealing, you got it, he's the worst of the crop.
I honestly knew the matching ceremony day would come, but I was planning on keeping that person away from as possible. Separate bedrooms, working all day. The only thing I hoped from my blood match was that they left me alone and minded their own business.
I stifled a yawn and told my parents goodnight.
