Nightmares

A scream rips violently from my throat as I sit up straight in bed. The covers tangle around my legs, and I hear running feet in the hallway.

Zak appears in the doorway. I see his blurry outline through my tears, thanks to the moonlight streaming in through the window.

Zak Bagans-yes, that Zak Bagans, from Ghost Adventures-walks over to me, worry etched onto his face.

"What's wrong, Saira? That's the fifth nightmare this week. Will you finally tell me what they're about?" Za asks as he slides under the covers next to me, just like the four previous nights, when I awoke from horrific nightmares.

I shakes my head, and Zak sighs. He pulls me closer to his chest, and I lean my head against his shoulder. I sense his dark hazel eyes on me, but I wait for my heartbeat to slow before speaking.

"They're back, Zak. They came back to haunt me, just as they promised," I say quietly. Zak looks down at me, and asks softly,"Who, Saira? Who came back to haunt you?" I shake my head, but still say,"The five. The five came back, Zak."

Zak's arms tighten around me, and I know that he finally understands what I'm talking about.

Let me back up for a second. My name is Saira Collings. I work for Ghost Adventures. Recently, I've come to Las Vegas and now live with Zak. I have twenty-seven scars upon my back from people I've watched die. Five of those scars are from people that I've killed, or helped to kill.

There, all caught up. Basically.

Zak kisses my forehead gently, his fingers stroking my hair. I calm down, but the dream still plays in my mind's eye.

It's Forest's death. We were outside the bar of Adromeda's Bar, one of our favorite hangouts during college. I had a bottle of random pills in my pocket, but was still trying to convince Forest to not go through with it.

He wouldn't listen. He reached into my pocket and grabbed the bottle. I do nothing to stop him. Popping the top off the bottle, Forest looks at me sadly, then throws back his head and empties all the colorful tablets into his mouth.

I watch as Forest drops to the ground. I could do nothing now. I stand there, a silent guard over my friend's body, wondering what I'll tell Chenelle, Forest's girlfriend. I know I can't tell her that I was the one to give him the pills, but I can't think of anything else besides Forest is dead. I'm sorry.

Now, in the real world, I hear Zak's heartbeat under my ear. The steady sound lulls me to sleep, and I close my eyes.

A demon face stares at me in my dream. It's glowing wolf eyes shed scarlet light. It's shapeless black mass of a body twists and turns, soaking in all light around it.

"Why are you here, demon?" I growl at it in Fire Talk, the language of demons. It cackles, a sound like nails on chalkboard, and says,"I am simply a messenger, Weapon. I am from the Dark Lord. He says that your happiness will not last."

Like it ever does for long, I think, and the demon laughs again. "Farewell, Saira Collings. Until next time. Oh yes, and your boyfriend? I would keep a close eye on him," the demon says. It disappears into hideous black smoke, which smells like rotten eggs and molded diapers.

I drift back into deep dreams, where only blackness greets me. Hopefully, no more nightmares will invade my quiet tonight.
