Eyes closed while facing the door, her lips trembled slightly as she tried to take a deep breath to calm herself. Feeling a bit calmer, she then opened her eyes and turned to look around once more.
The living room looked neat and welcoming as always, an evidence of a well-loved environment.
A glance at the side table nearest to her revealed an empty bowl for her precious accessories, bought during her first week of moving in because she was forever misplacing her accessories whenever she reached home. Beside the bowl was a bunch of her keys with a little female wooden doll key chain, attached to her keys the first time she received the key chain.
Refusing to dwell any further on the contents, she looked away and glanced at the three photographs placed neatly on the top of her short drawer.
One, taken so long ago of herself, in a classroom giving a big grin with a lunchbox in front of her. One, of her side view, playing a piano on stage during a piano recital. Lastly, one, of her in her school uniform sitting under a shady tree doing some reading.
An irony, surely. Close to two years of staying together under the same roof, and yet, there were no photographs of him. In fact, the whole living room was devoid of his presence. It was all about her. There was nothing tangible that could hint that she wasn't living alone at a first glance, save for his clothes that were hung neatly inside the bedroom wardrobe.
When was the last time she had managed to see him before she went to bed? When was the last time they had gone out together? When was the last time they had sat down for a meal? Or even had a small talk? When was the last time they had even cuddled?
... ... How did everything ended up like this?
A lone tear escaped from her right eye and dripped to the floor. Her eyes stared at the wet drop on the floor.
Enough... It was time to face reality. It was time to face the truth. The fact that she was lonely. The fact that she needed companionship. The fact that she was human too.
She raised her left hand to wipe away the tear stain and felt her ring rubbing against her pale face. She stared blankly at the ring.
The engagement ring of promise, the promise of happiness, the happiness of being together forever... ...
Tears started to roll unrestrained down her eyes.
... ... Just where did everything go wrong?
Closing her eyes in attempt to compose herself once more, she took several deep breaths as she willed herself to stop crying. Once she felt sure that she was calm, she opened her teary eyes before walking to the side table. She then started removing her ring from her finger. Holding the ring in her hand, she took a last look before closing her eyes as she brought the ring up to her lips to kiss it. She then left the ring inside the bowl before giving the little female doll key chain a last look.
A barely audible whisper of thank you and good bye.
A last deep breath to recollect herself.
It was time.
Time to go.
Time to move on.
Turning towards the door once more, she collected her luggage and slowly opened the door. Pausing to put on her sunglasses first, she then walked out, never looking back as the door behind her shut with a gentle snap.
