The next morning Anya was leaving the main building for street sweepers when two Bolshevik soldiers stopped her.
"You need to come with us."
They said as they grabbed her arms.
"Wait what did I do?"
They brought her to Bolshevik headquarters.
"Sit down General Vaganov will see you soon."
They sat her down as they went through paper work.
One of the soldiers stepped into Gleb's office.
"Is that trouble maker in yet?"
"Yes Sir."
"Bring her in."
He stepped back out and Anya stood up.
"He will see you now."
Anya slowly stepped in his office. Gleb had his back turned to her.
"Leningrad is lovely isn't it."
"Yes it is."
"Makes me wonder why would anyone want to leave. Why do y..."
He turned and saw Anya.
"O it you. O umm Anya."
"Hello Gleb."
"Anya we have gotten word that you are trying to leave Russia by pretending to be the late Princess."
Anya looked at her feet a shamed.
"Anya please don't tell me it's true."
Anya didn't want to lie to him.
"Be very careful of these rumors that prevail
Be very careful what you say
I was a boy who lived the truth behind the tale
and no one got away
I saw the children as the soldiers closed the gate
The youngest daughter and her pride
My father leaving on the night they met their fate
His pistol by his side
The Neva flows,
a new wind blows
And soon it will be spring
The leaves unfold
The tzar lies cold
A revolution is a simple thing
I heard the shots
I heard the screams
But it's the silence after I remember most
The world stopped breathing
And I was no longer a boy
My father shook his head and told me not to ask
My mother said he died of shame
But I believe he did a proud and vital task
And in my fathers name
The Neva flows
A new wind blows
And soon it will be spring
The leaves unfold
The tzar lies cold
Could I have pulled the trigger
If I'd been told.
Be careful what a dream may bring
A revolution
is
a simple thing."
Gleb gently put his hand under her chin and made her look at him.
"Please Anya I begging you don't get involved with these conmen. The reason they want to take you to Paris is so they can prove that you are Anastasia. They are just doing this to get money and to leave Russia. Promise me that you won't try to leave Russia."
Gleb gently held her hand.
"I promise Gleb."
Anya had tears in her eyes. She hugged Gleb and closed her eyes as she rested her head on his chest. Gleb was shocked but wrapped his arms around her waist. Anya realized what she was doing and slowly pulled away. She looked up into his brown eyes. She stepped away from him still keeping eye contact.
"Goodbye Gleb."
"Goodbye Anya."
Anya stepped out of his office and left to go back to work.
Gleb stood there shocked and bewildered.
"An underhanded girl
An act of desperation
And to my consternation
I let her go...
She wants what she can get-
Is that a fair depiction?
Does she believe her fiction?
It's hard to know...
Is it innocence or guile?
Or nothing but a childish act of will?
She doesn't know she needs you
She willfully misleads you
But still....still...!
A son becomes a man!
At his father's knee
If my father asked questions
Well...where would we be?
She's nothing but a child.
A waif who needs protection
I feel a strange connection-
I can't allow!
She says it's all a game
She trembles like a flower
But in her, there's a power
I see that now!
I am nothing but a man!
With nothing but his orders
To fulfill!
But, still...!
Still....
Still!"
