Lauren had always laughed when women in cheesy movies cried at the first sight of their child's sonogram. It just seemed a little ridiculous to her. It was a little blob of cells that resembled a jelly bean on the screen but the moment she saw hers for the first time she couldn't help it, the tears just came.
The moment she heard the baby's heartbeat her whole world paused and she stopped listening to Dr. Barnes, who was busy informing them of the fetus' measurements and how good the placenta looked.
She felt something shift deep within her. While before she was sure she couldn't get rid of it she still wasn't completely sure she wanted it. Listening to her baby's heart beating she felt a warmth envelop her that she had never experienced before. It started in her chest and soon began radiating warm tingles throughout her whole body within seconds. The smile she wore on her face was one full of awe and unconditional love only a mother could feel for her child.
The tears running down her face were what caught Ty's attention during his own trance the sonogram had put him under. He was simultaneously trying to listen to the doctors information although he didn't quite understand most of it, and he was also trying to stare and memorize everything about the fetus on the screen too. All while still trying to comfort Lauren.
Ty's mind was still stuck on complete shock. Never, not once did he think of the possibility that he could have gotten her pregnant. Although in hindsight he should've seen it coming. They stopped worrying so much about using protection after they both got tested and showed each other they were clean. Pulling out wasn't the best method to prevent making babies. Ty better than anyone should have known this. He felt like the biggest idiot in the world.
Things got real as fuck as soon as he saw the fetus on that screen and heard the heartbeat. A million thoughts were flying through his mind. Mostly he felt a whole lot of guilt about the whole situation. He felt guilty he hadn't realized she was pregnant sooner. He felt guilty he hadn't been there for her and that it stressed her out to the point she had to be hospitalized. He felt guilty that his carelessness had potentially ruined Lauren's whole life and career. He even felt guilty at the tiny feeling of happiness and excitement that was bubbling up with every swish of the the baby's heartbeat he heard. He couldn't allow himself to go there yet. No, not before he talked to Lauren and figured out where her head was at about all of this.
What if she resented him? Ty felt like he had created a huge mess, he wouldn't blame her if she felt that way.
He was pulled out of his musings by the sound of Dr. Barnes voice asking if they wanted sonogram pictures to take home with them.
Ty looked at Lauren and realized she still wasn't listening. She was engrossed with the image on the screen.
"Um, yes please. Can we get doubles?" Ty asked.
"Of course." Dr. Barnes directed his attention to Lauren before he spoke again, "Miss Jauregui, there's some things I'd like to discuss with you going forward in your pregnancy. But first do you have any questions or concerns about anything? You came in with pains but the IV fluids we had you on look to have helped some. I'd still like to run some blood and urine tests if that's okay with you." Dr. Barnes was tapping away at Lauren's patient chart in his iPad getting ready to order lab slips for her.
Lauren was still in a trance listening to the baby's heart beat but Ty gently nudged her when she didn't answer.
"Huh, what?" She asked Ty and realized he was pointing at the doctor who was waiting for a response.
"Oh! I'm so sorry, Dr. Barnes. I was not paying attention." Lauren looked bashful and felt a little rude that she had ignored the doctor speaking to her.
