Blackbird by India Jean
Cambridge England, 6:42:50
"Alright Nomi, you go out there and do what we practiced okay?" My mom reminded me before I walked out on stage. I nodded worried what would happen if I messed up. She kissed my forehead and fixed my hair. "Chin up, stand straight."
"Next up we have 11 year old Nomi Clark singing, Blackbird."
I slowly shuffled my way into the middle of the small auditorium stage. I pushed my glasses up with my index finger and took another look at my mom on the side of the stage. "Why mummy?" She grabbed my arms on either side, looking me in the eyes.
"Do you want to be a runner up or do you want to be a winner?"
I knew better then to do nothing but oblige. I looked at the trophy one last time before I dropped it to the ground, it breaking into two pieces. My mother turned around and got in the car. Me sadly trailing behind leaving my trophy in the street...
