James Joyce: Chophouse Ulysses
To get into the mood for Finnigan's Wake, one of the most difficult works in modern literature, I decided to tackle Ulysses. The way that I applied that to our class was to create an Instagram for James Joyce and to follow it along, chapter by chapter as if he were updating it as he were writing it. If you look on most "Read before you die.." lists Ulysses is up there on the top of the list. The essential problem with that is, that it is not very user friendly. Filled with stream of consciousness pot holes, and just stylistic traps most people give up. If you get through Ulysses well, you are no fun to talk to at a party because you go on and on and on about how great you are and how deep he was. Sure, Joyce was plenty deep, but he was mad funny like Mel Brooks in places too and if you take him too seriously you have missed the point. With that in mind I offered my own eyes as tribute and I read the book and broke it down, so you may not have to read it or if you do, perhaps you will know what to look for when you do read it.
What I did: Starting from scratch I created a persona online for James Joyce. His email, herrsatan616@yahoo.com after his unenviable nickname when he lived in Zurich. His handle on Instagram is

Which is where you can find the finished project. What is the 616? That is the date of Bloomsday, the day that every James Joyce fan celebrates Ulysses and all its glory. I just can't even I have gone into the belly of the beast, truly. I leave you with my crowning achievement. My works cited. It is over 70 works large.
